Since Rory McIlroy was in the party document in Rome after the Ryder Cup 2023 and promised a European victory in Bethpage Black in 2025, the expectation for the next chapter of the biennial event has been registered on the sport.
After 23 months that included an unexpected captain selection, playing captain discourse and a few bars, the Ryder Cup 2025 in Bethpage Black finally arrived at Long Island this week.
While the chatter around the player pay, the fit of Bryson Decchambeau as a teammate and potential combinations are starting to close, the only thing that we remain is a brilliant hype video compiled by Europe and our own thoughts about what can deliver three September days to Bethpage Black.
First the hype video.
This weekend in “The People’s Country Club” promises to deliver a high drama, confrontation and, if Europe gets its way, the first Road Ryder Cup victory in 13 years. As is the case with every Ryder Cup, it will probably also include the unexpected. What that means is the gamble. Here is mine.
JT leads the Americans
Scottie Scheffler is the undisputed best player in the world and just won the Procore Championship, which he only played to stay sharp for this event. Add to the fact that Scheffler and Brooks Koepka suffered a humiliating 9-and-7 defeat by Ludvig Aberg and Viktor HOVOLAND in Rome, and it would be reasonable to assume that the world no. 1 is planning to put on the wall in New York this week.
“I don’t know if motivation is really the right word,” Scheffler said on Tuesday about what happened in Rome. “I think you can learn from your victories and losing you, and I have achieved some nice victories here, and I have also had some difficult losses.
“I don’t think it can be modest how difficult from a week of Rome was for us. I think we could certainly have done it better. That was not how I expected the week. I think we learned from it, and we are prepared this time as always.”
I expect Scheffler to play well this week, or at least better than his 0-2-2 in Rome. But although Van Scheffler is expected to transport the USA team, the heart of the team, Justin Thomas, will be at the forefront.
5 Hidden Details Spotted on the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black
By means of:
James Colgan
Thomas is 7-4-2 in his Ryder Cup career and is unbeaten in Sunday Singles. After he was in the wilderness during the 2023 season, Thomas played as a top 10 player in the past year. He ranked sixth on the PGA Tour in adapted total strokes (1.55), per data golf, and broke his Winless drought in April at the RBC heritage heritage. Thomas’s game fell this summer, but he lives for the team events, and I expect him to be on Bethpage at his best.
JT plays four sessions and goes 3-0-1, including a singles victory on Shane Lowry. Scheffler goes 2-2-1 but loses Jon Rahm in singles.
A Gansei for Captain America
Bryson Deschambeau is one of the five best players in the world and should be a weapon for Team USA.
DCHAMBEAU has leaned itself in the team aspect of Liv Golf and has become more comfortable in his skin since he has made the leap to the separated competition. Scheffler, Xander Schauffele and others have praised the “All -in” approach of Deschambeau to be part of Team USA. If you take into account the ability of Dechambeau to feed the crowd, there is every reason to believe that he will be one of the best players of Captain Keegan Bradley this week.
Saw here.
DCHAMBEAU and Cameron Young take a 1-up loss of Viktor HOVOLAND and Aberg in Friday Foursomes. There will be two more losses on Saturday for Dephambeau and he falls to Tommy Fleetwood in Sunday Singles.
A 0-4-0 record for the Crushers GC frontman.
Europe opens with Haymaker, but the US responds with Flurry
The last two times the Ryder Cup on American land was disputed, the Americans opened 4-0 and 3-1 victories in the opening matches of the first square. The US prepared this to Leiden 5-3 and 6-2 respectively, after day 1.
Europe is turning the script for a raw Bethpage-mixture on Friday morning and wins all four types of competitions, including a dominant 6-and-5 victory for Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood about Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele.
Despite the massive opening salvo of Europe, the US will go 3.5-.5 in four balls to reduce the shortage and on Saturday the four-cushion session will win 3-1 to rise 6.5-5.5. Another 3-1 victory in Fourballs gives the US a lead of 9.5-6.5 on the way to Sunday.
Europe storms back to win
Entering singles with a three -point lead and the crowd behind them, the Americans seem to have the momentum when Bethpage starts the last day.
But the tide soon turns while Rahm beats Scheffler, HOVOLAND beats Young and McIlroy beats Cantlay. Thomas’s victory over Lowry comes the tide, but Aberg takes Russell Henley, Justin Rose dominates JJ Spaun and Robert Macintyre beats Harris English to make it 12.5-10.5. Tyrrell Hatton beats Ben Griffin and then Fleetwood Dechbeau 2 and 1 takes down to conquer the cup for Europe.
McIlroy plays all five sessions and goes 4-0-1 to lead Europe with 4.5 points.
