Children’s yoga. One of mine FAVORITE lessons to teach. And I teach different classes: Vinyasa, Chair, Hatha and Pilates.
I am a mother of one child (eight years old) and work in special primary education, so I clearly love children. But there’s something magical about seeing a child roll out a yoga mat and get ready for a mindful, yet playful practice.
So why should you sign your child(ren) up for yoga next year?
- An alternative to sports – My son has tried every sport (football, basketball, baseball, etc.) and it is very clear that he will not play in the NBA or MLB. During COVID, I signed up for Peloton and practiced yoga with my child. It was small, but it would hold his attention for ten minutes (WOW!). During the 15 minutes of movement we focus on breathing, making the yoga poses fun with silly names (Halloween cat, peeing dog, slippery cobra) and ending with a dance party. (KPop Demon Hunters, anyone?) Just like an organized sport, kids get similar cardio benefits without the competitive nature.
- Psychological benefits – Yoga generally offers numerous benefits, but let’s look at it from a child’s perspective. Whether in daycare or school (public/private or homeschooling), their minds are engaged and overstimulated for most of the day. Yoga ensures that the body and mind can relax and regulate themselves. After the physical yoga practice, practicing an art/craft improves fine motor skills and concentration.
- New faces – A yoga studio that offers children’s classes is a great place to meet new caregivers and their children. I like to hear stories from families who follow children’s yoga. Often the caregivers stay in the studio and after class we talk about common interests (local family events, family friendly restaurants) and I have even convinced moms to take adult classes.
If you and your child(ren) are looking for something new in 2026, then children’s yoga might be what you’ve been waiting for.
