It ended Everton 1 Newcastle 4.
Before each match, we ask one of our writers to come up with three positives and three negatives after the match.
An interesting Premier League match on Merseyside…
Enough to talk about.
On this occasion it is Simon Ritter:
POSITIVE
Attack from the back
Malick Thiaw scored his long-awaited first goal for Newcastle United, the fastest goal in the Premier League this season.
After being denied by a goal-line clearance in Marseille, no one could stop his header from Lewis Miley’s excellent left corner.
He’s only 19
Young Miley can still live out her teenage dream for a few more months.
An assist for the first goal and a cool finish to put the two of us ahead.
Few opponents can nutmeg Jordan Pickford from distance, but our midfielder did just that. He could be in for a stormy rest of the season.
Eddie the Unpredictable
Our head coach signaled the changes and recorded a first away win in the EPL since April.
Against Everton we sometimes played total football, turning the nominal 4-3-3 into any number of combinations.
Can I feel a little smug after declaring a few days ago that correctly naming an Eddie Howe lineup in advance is virtually impossible?
With two games a week, flexibility must be his friend.
(Noted in posts: Elanga uses his pace impressively, Hall and Livramento become match fitter, BNW shows his superior technique, Big Joe somewhere near his best.)
NEGATIVES
Careless possession
Despite changes in midfield and defense, Newcastle were still careless in possession and gave the ball away far too often.
Against a team with a decent attack we would have gotten more than one consolation goal.
An extra person
About twenty minutes until Miley’s goal, Everton seemed to be playing with an extra man.
They worked the ball impressively and would have scored had Big Dan Burn and Thiaw not been outstanding.
It could/should have been six!
At least three one-on-one conversations with Pickford were not exploited.
A 6-1 score would have been a fair result based on the chances created.
Aaron Ramsdale was redundant for much of the match, but almost equalized after 22 minutes with a hospital pass to Bruno Guimaraes.
