25 Whitman-Hanson teachers, staff laid off after school committee changes course – Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News

WHITMAN, MASS. (WHDH) – More than two dozen Whitman-Hanson teachers, paraprofessionals and staff will be notified Monday that they will be laid off.

The Whitman-Hanson School Committee on Wednesday night reversed course on plans to delay impending teacher layoffs, saying a vote last week violated state law.

Superintendent of Schools Jeffrey Szymaniak said the district cannot wait 40 days to take steps to resolve the budget.

“If we don’t start cutting back now, we will close a school in March,” Szymaniak said. “If we don’t do what we need to do, everything beyond student safety will be on the table.”

Parents and teachers shared their frustration Wednesday night that the district is short $1.4 million and will have to cut 25 jobs. Another five vacancies remain unfilled.

A newly hired business manager from outside the district discovered the shortage and warned that further delays in layoffs would worsen financial pressures.

The move is expected to save about $800,000.

The Whitman-Hanson Education Association, the district’s teachers union, announced they had no confidence in Superintendent Szymaniak.
