The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has approved the testing of a new timer system on Select World Tour Tournament from 2026, so that players must be ready for playing within 25 seconds after each rally. The decision, made during the BWF council meeting on August 29, is intended to increase the pace of badminton competitions through systematic enforcement tests that from November 18-23 November November. The new regulations require players to prepare for the next rally within 25 seconds, whereby the timing started as soon as the referee updates the score. Both the server and the recipient must be in position when the service is due.“With the regulations, BWF can continue his tests of the timer, including the full application of the system where players must be ready to play the next rally within 25 seconds,” BWF stated in their release. The Federation has designed the system to allow players certain freedoms between meetings while maintaining the match current.“Players have the freedom to undertake normal activities between rallies, including deducting and getting a drink that currently requires the permission of the referee, and the freedom to apply cold spray in itself, when they are ready to serve/receive within 25 seconds,” explained the administrative body. The 25 -second rule was determined after BWF had analyzed data from hundreds of matches at large championships and world tour events. Their research showed that competitions with minimal disruptions were on average 22 seconds between the meetings, while the meetings themselves took about nine seconds.UMPIRES will retain the authority to provide extra time during special circumstances, such as medical interventions or considerable judicial maintenance. The BWF has already carried out initial non-integrated tests during a recent world tour event, aimed at optimal placement of time clocks to guarantee visibility for all participants. The Federation Plant Extra Tasting in the coming months and has invited national federations to perform internal tests with their players and staff. To collect extensive feedback, BWF has launched an online survey for stakeholders, with answers on September 19.
