Sheffield United are hoping for a busy January period now that the transfer window is open.

Sheffield United are in fifteenth place in the Championship, just eight points above the relegation zone.

This comes after SUFC’s terrible start to the season under Ruben Selles, which left them winless after five league games. Since Reappointment of Chris WilderResults have gradually improved, but the Blades will look to strengthen his squad during the January window.

Additions are a must if United are even thinking about a late play-off push, but departures will happen, with many young players looking to leave on loan.

One player who seemed to have disappeared from the Sheffield United spotlight was Djibril Soumare.

A time to make an impression for Djibril Soumare

Sheffield United signed Djibril Soumare on loan from Portuguese side Braga, after a successful loan spell with fellow Portuguese top team Nacional. There is an obligation to buy the midfield if certain criteria are met, probably promotion.

Soumare was seen as a kind of replacement for Vini Souza, who left for Wolfsburg in the summer, but was unable to make that place his own due to a disappointing start to his SUFC career.

With Sydie Peck and Tom Davies both currently injured and Oliver Arblaster not quite up to speed after thirteen months away through injury, opportunities have opened up for the Senegalese.

The defensive midfielder started back-to-back wins over Stoke City and Leicester City before making way for Arblaster in both matches. Soumare impressed in both appearances and played an influential role in the 3-1 home win over the Foxes, making the most tackles (8) and winning the most duels (14) in the match.

Despite this, the 22-year-old’s season somewhat mirrors that of the Blades. There has been quality shown in his recent performances, but it feels he needs to be more consistent if he is to cement his place at SUFC.

Now that the transfer window is open, it feels as if Soumare has seized his opportunity just in time and finally shown the quality he possesses.

Standing at around 185cm tall, Soumare has a physical presence that suits the Championship side and offers manager Wilder a different option in midfield to those already in his squad.

The arrival of Jairo Riedewald in October has left the Blades well-stocked in midfield, but competition is looming. With Sydie Peck and Tom Davies expected to return to action this month, Soumare faces a battle to keep his place in the starting XI.
