203 firearms, including guns, seized explosives at great action in Manipur

In a major performance against illegal arms circulation, joint security forces recovered a huge cache of weapons, ammunition and explosives during coordinated overnight operations in the Heerveld districts of Manipur.

The operations guided by information were performed between midnight of July 3 and the morning of July 4 in Tengnoupal, Kangpokpi, Chandel and Churacandpur districts.

According to a statement from the office of the director -general of the police, Manipur, the operations were carried out together by the police of Manipur, Assam Rifles, the Indian army and other central armed police services (CAPFS). The raids followed specific intelligence input with regard to the presence of warlike materials in inland locations.

Safety forces restored 203 firearms from different calibres and a considerable amount of ammunition and explosives. Among the seized weapons were 21 insas guns, 11 AK series guns, 26 self-loading rifles (SLRs), 2 sniper rifles, 3 carabins, 17.303 guns, 2 mortars, 3 m79 shrap launchers and 31 single-bore guns. The cache also included 38 pump action cannons, 4 muzzle-loaded guns and a number of locally made pistols and guns.

In addition to the firearms, forces also have 29 rounds of 5.56 mm ammunition, 80 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, 30 improvised explosive devices (IEDs), 10 hand grenades, 9 pompi shells and 2 latodrenhades.

Police sources said that the poor were probably stored by various armed groups that are active in the hill areas and can be used to further destabilize the area. The recovery, she added, brought a significant blow to the operational capacity of militant outfits that continue to pose a threat to peace in Manipur.

The director -general of the police office praised the success of the joint operation and emphasized the growing synergy between state and central security forces. The recovery also reflects improved intelligence collection and coordinated version between the security agencies used in the state affected by conflicts.

Officials said that such operations would continue in a long -term way, especially in view of the persistent of ethnic tensions and efforts to guarantee the safe return and rehabilitation of displaced residents.

Authorities urged the public to remain vigilant and to report suspicious activities or information regarding illegal weapons to the nearest police station or the central control room.

The Manipur police repeated her dedication to public safety, maintaining the law and order and the rebuilding of community confidence in the aftermath of more than a year of ethnic unrest that thousands have hit throughout the state.
