Toyota has officially unveiled the ninth-generation model of the Hilux pickup truck, called Hilux Travo, replacing the eighth-generation model known as Hilux Revo, which has been produced for a decade. This new-generation model made its global debut today in Thailand in conjunction with the Thai Motor Expo 2025, and at the same time was also announced for the Japanese, Australian and European markets, introduced in different variants and powertrain units, and for the first time, Hliux also comes with a fully electric powertrain (BEV).

However, this new generation model is still based on the chassis platform ladder frame Innovative International Multi-Purpose Vehicle (IMV) used since the seventh generation Hilux Vigo. You can even see that this Hilux Travo still uses the same cabin and doors as the Vigo, but gets a completely new design on the front and rear beds.

To differentiate it from the previous model, this Hilux Travo received a mechanical upgrade called Dynamic Cloud, with the addition of body mounts to give the body a stiffer body, an updated suspension for a smoother ride, hydraulic engine mounts and sliding body mounts to reduce vibration and a larger steering axle for better accuracy and response.

Toyota also offers disc brakes for the rear axle and also the option of an electric power steering system (EPS), which it already offers as an option on the Hilux Revo in the 48 volt simple hybrid variant. Because EPS makes this possible, this Hilux Travo also offers the advanced driving assistance system (ADAS) Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, with cruise control adaptive assistance and lane keeping assistance, allowing Level 2 autonomous driving capabilities to be achieved.

This new model also gets the Multi-Terrain System (MTS), which was also introduced on the previous simple hybrid Hilux Revo, with a driving mode off road including Dirt, Sand, Mud, Rock and Snow, which can be selected via a rotary switch, with each mode re-tuning throttle control and also gearbox response.

The engine is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox (torque is limited to just 420 Nm) or a six-speed automatic transmission. For Australian and European market models, it is once again offered with a simple 48-volt hybrid system that gets a 12PS/56Nm starter-generator unit to provide extra power when needed.

For the European and British markets, in addition to the hybrid variant, Hilux Travo is also offered in a fully electric version (EV), where the same option is also offered in Thailand, known as Hilux Travo-e. This model is powered by two electric motors, one of which is on the front axle with a power of 112 hp and a torque of 205 Nm, while another motor that drives the rear axle has 179 hp and a maximum torque of 268 Nm. This model does not use a live axle at the rear, but replaces it with a De Dion setup to match the electric motor.

Overall, Toyota claims that this Hilux BEV moves with a power supply of 196 hp. These engines are powered by a battery with a capacity of 59.2 kWh, which provides a range of only 240 km in the WLTP test cycle. The battery can receive a DC fast charging system up to 125 kWh, as well as a 10 kW AC charger.

The battery is protected by a Diamond Shield casing that ensures it is not damaged when the pickup drives over rocky paths or other obstacles, allowing the Hilux Travo-e to wade through water up to a depth of 700mm. Toyota also claims that this electric pickup has a towing capacity of 1,600 kg and a payload of 715 kg.

For the exterior design, this Hilux Trevo is said to adopt the ‘Cyber ​​Sumo’ concept. At first glance, this pickup truck has tapered and thin headlights, requiring LED projector lighting as standard on all variants. On the higher variants, it also has built-in L-shaped LED graphics for daytime running lights.

For the Thai market, the Hilux Trevo is offered in 4X4 Single Cab, 4X2 Prerunner Smart Cab, 4X4 4Trex, 4X2 Prerunner Double Cab, 4X4 Double Cab 4Trex and 4X4 Double Cab Overland variants. The price ranges from 767,000 baht (RM98,800) to 1,366,000 baht (RM175,900). While the EV version of the Travo-e is also sold at a price of 1,491,000 baht (RM192,000).

For now, all these variants are only offered in the High Rider version, while the Low Rider variant with smaller tires and lower suspension is yet to be introduced. Customers who want a Hilux Low Rider can still buy the Revo version which is still on sale or the Hilux Champ which is being produced as a more affordable option.

The ninth generation Hilux will go on sale outside Thailand next year, where Japan will not receive this model until mid-2026. In addition to the EV version, the Hilux will also be offered in a hydrogen fuel cell version expected to be sold in Europe and Oceania, where production is expected to start in 2028.
