The American Express is the first 2026 PGA Tour event takes place in the continental United States and is part of the early season “West Coast Swing”.
It takes place on three courses at La Quinta Country Club, the PGA West Stadium Course and the PGA West Nicklaus Tournament Course with a pro-am format.
Rounds will be played on each of the three courses before those who make the cut play the final round at La Quinta Country Club California on Sunday.
The event dates back to 1960 when it was known as the Palm Springs Classic. It has subsequently been known as the CareerBuilder Challenge, Bob Hope Desert Classic, Bob Hope Chrysler Classic and the Humana Challenge.
Sep Straka is the reigning champion having won the title in 2025, with a top-class field of participants tries to follow in his footsteps.
Other past winners include Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, Corey Pavin, Jay Haas, Tom Kite, Fred Couples, David Duval, Phil MickelsonMike Weir, Patrick Reed, Trili, Hudson Swafford And Jon Rahm And Nick Dunlap.

American Express golf format and schedule
The American Express is played over four rounds / 72 holes, spread over three different courses.
Players will rotate around La Quinta Country Club, PGA West Stadium Course and PGA West Nicklaus Tournament Course for the first three days.
La Quinta will then host the post-cut final round on Sunday.
- Day 1 – Thursday January 22
- Day 2 – Friday January 23rd
- Day 3 – Saturday January 24th
- Day 4 – Sunday January 25
The American Express tournament has a prize pool of $9,200,000 USD, up from $8,800,000 in 2025.
