The XJ Jeep Cherokee was a total game changer for the SUV market, with remarkable performance on the road thanks to his Unibody construction that was not at the expense of remarkable off-road options. The last generation of Cherokee, on the other hand, was in no way particularly remarkable, although the design of the Split-Headlight design was quite controversial when it was first launched. Jeep looks at new horizons for the Cherokee 2026, which gives it a standard hybrid powertrain that reaches 37 mpg and standard four-wheel drive for slightly less money than an AWD 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid. Jeep’s plug-in hybrids have not been very reliable, but perhaps the first traditional hybrid of the brand will turn out to be different.

Can the new Cherokee breathe new life into the fanfare of the legendary XJ? Jeep certainly hopes that. The Cherokee from 2026 is blessed with a solid series of standard functions, including a digital meter cluster, a level 2 driver’s system with adaptive cruise control and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, all against a competitive basic price price.

This is Jeep’s first traditional hybrid

All 2026 Jeep Cherokees are powered by a 1.6-liter inline-4 engine with turbo vehicle and two electric motors that steer a respectable total of 210 hp and 230 pound-foot torque by an ECVT to all four wheels. The electric motors are powered by a 1.08 kWh battery pack that is exclusively charged via brake regeneration, and Jeep estimates that the powertrain must offer a competitive 37 mpg combined and a maximum cruise oak of more than 500 miles.

The new Cherokee is built on the extremely flexible STLA -large Unibody platform from Stellantis that also supports the Jeep Wagoneer S and Dodge Charger EV, which could explain why Jeep is estimated to dear on a somewhat portly 4,295 pounds. At 188.1 centimeters long it is approximately five centimeters longer than the Subaru Forester and about three centimeters longer than a CR-V. Compared to the last generation of Cherokee, the new is approximately the same width and height, but it is five centimeters longer and more importantly the wheelbase is approximately six centimeters longer. The freight capacity of the new Cherokee behind the rear seats has risen with 6 cubic foot, and with the rear seats folded freight capacity is larger with more than 13 cubic foot. Strangely enough, the legroom behind the rear chair is lowered by two inches to 38.5 inches, but shoulder room is a bit up and the hip room wins almost six centimeters, which should help the rear seats to feel well.

Jeep is supposed to be a maker of robust, off-road capable SUVs, so all Cherokees come standard with Jeep Active Drive, which works in two-wheel drive until the car determines that all wheels must be dealt with a 50:50 Couplel distribution. It has the best-in-class approach and departure corners of 19.6 degrees and 29.4 degrees respectively, but a medium 8 inch ground freedom-the Subaru Forester Hybrid has 8.7 inch soil freedom. It is likely that Jeep will launch more off-road-oriented Cherokee trims in the coming years, but that is not yet mentioned.

It will be rich, even from standard

Jeep stacks on the functions for the new Cherokee beyond the standard AWD hybrid powertrain, which usually justifies the high basic price. It will contain a standard package of driver-assistance functions that automatically comprises emergency brakes with pedestrian and bicycle detection, blind spot monitoring, emergency brakes behind, intersection of collision assistance, adaptive cruise control and rainfall wipers. Optional upgrades include a sunroof with double pan, a kick-activated Power Liftgate, a 360-degree camera, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a digital rear-view mirror and Alexa in-vehicle assistant.

However, the Cherokee will compete against one of the most competitive and busy market segments on American roads today, the compact crossover class. Most of his competitors offer considerably cheaper versions with only gas from their compact cross-overs and similarly priced hybrid variants such as the CR-V and Forester, and competitors such as the Hyundai Tucson, Toyota RAV4 and Kia Sportage all offer hybrids for thousands of less than the 2026 Cherokee. To make it even more difficult, Toyota’s completely new RAV4 will be on sale towards the end of this year, and it will also be offered exclusively with a hybrid powertrain.

Hoping to buy a basic Cherokee? Be willing to wait

Jeep only offers the higher equipment levels of the Cherokee by the end of this year, the $ 42,495 Limited and the top-of-the-line $ 45,995 overland. The $ 36,995 Basic Cherokee and the $ 39,995 Laredo -Trim are planned to arrive at dealers in early 2026. However, it will be produced in the Toluca, Mexico assembly factory of Stellantis, so we will see where the rate senses by the end of the year and how the 2026 can influence Cherokee prices.

Will the new Cherokee be able to revive the fanfare of the beloved XJ? On paper, it should at least be a more competitive and compelling offer than his predecessor, but Jeep misses a big characteristic of many of his compact crossover competitors: a reputation for reliability. All in all, the redesigned Cherokee should be more competitive than in a long time, but only the time will tell how buyers think about it.
