How to watch Cognizant Classic on Saturday
Thanks to a blistering 62 in the first round, followed by a 69 in the second round and 11 under par, Austin Smotherman is in position to claim his first PGA Tour victory this weekend as the 31-year-old pro has a three-shot lead over the field with two rounds remaining.
“How do I feel? Pretty ecstatic, pretty excited to be in this position,” Smotherman said Friday. “Yeah, just trying to be steady. Austin Smotherman golfed there today. All under par which I thought would have been a follow-up round like yesterday, which was a special one, and try not to get too far ahead of myself thinking I’m going to make every long putt I look at, which was the feeling yesterday, and today I’m still making a 55-footer on 17.”
“It’s kind of fun to watch those go in and feel like you’re stealing them on a course where you’re hoping to get into two of that range, and you’ve got a lot of that distance if you get stuff with you when the wind goes away, all those slopes and greens are fast,” he continued. “Yeah, officiating a PGA Tour event, come on, pretty cool.”
But to claim that big win, Smotherman will have to stay ahead of some stiff competition. There are eleven other players within six shots of his lead, including big winner Shane Lowry (-5).
