The Jaecoo J5 is an example of a smaller alternative to the popular J7 in Malaysia. While Indonesia and Thailand have already welcomed the J5 as an electric vehicle (EV), the unity can be seen on the Omoda | Jaecoo Carnival in Desa Park City from 21-24 August is with an internal combustion engine (ICE).
Malaysia receives the J5 with a 1.5 -Leriter Turbo -Turbo -Intercooled (TCI) engine that develops 147 PS (145 hp or 108 kW) and 210 Nm of torque, sent to the front wheels via a CVT. The claimed fuel consumption is 7.5 liters per 100 km according to the WLTC standard.
This setup differs from what is offered in the UK, which receives both ICE and EV versions. The ice model is powered by 1.6-liter turbo compressor inline-four petrol union that serves 147 PS (145 hp or 108 kW) and 275 Nm of torque, combined with a seven-speed gearbox with double clutch that controls the front wheels. For further context, the J7 2WD that is currently for sale here is also supplied with a 1.6T engine linked to a 7DCT, albeit with higher outputs of 197 PS and 290 Nm.
Omoda | Jaecoo Malaysia also wanted to point out the suspension of the J5 with Macpherson-Stutten at the front and a rear multi-link, which is rare in the B-segment SUV room. The Honda HR-V, Proton X50, Chery Tiggo Cross all have a back torsion bar compared.

Suspension -Opzij, the competition is about the same size as the J5, where the Jaecoo model of 4.380 mm long, 1,860 mm wide and 1,650 mm measures. The wheelbase of the J5 of 2,620 mm is 10 mm more than the HR-V and Tiggo cross, and 20 mm more than the X50. The Omoda 5 has the superior wheelbase among this group at 2,630 mm. For further comparison, the J7 is even larger at 4,500 mm long, 1.865 mm wide and 1,680 mm long has a wheelbase of 2,672 mm.
If you like the Range Rover Evoque-inspired look of the J7, you will be happy to know that the J5 is following the same square template. However, there are differences because the wide schedule with vertical lines meets the headlights of the headlights that integrate the integrated day run lights, in contrast to the Dual-Tier setup of the J7.
Elsewhere there are conventional door handles instead of the rinse on the J7, and the J5 is available with a two -tone paint finish. Inside you move a large vertical infotainment touchscreen that dominates the dashboard, which differs from the J7 in a few ways.
Firstly, the air openings, in particular those on the edges, are more subtly integrated to create a more seamless look. The same also applies to the digital instrument cluster that goes into the dashboard instead of the J7 that the tablet seems to enjoy. The center console of the J5 also has a more minimalist look, with only cup holders and an armrest that has placed itself in the back of the wireless charging pillow. This is because the gear selector is now a stem on the steering column and releases vertical space.

It is also worth pointing to the J5 -Guide plates back on the roughness in other parts of his cabin compared to the J7. For example, “normal” door handles are used instead of thick, while the dashboard -inlet is easier with fewer pattern surfaces and brightwork. Another USP is recommended is TUV certification for the pet-friendly materials used in the cabin.
When it comes to technology, the J5 has an 8-inch wide screen digital instrument cluster and a 13.2-inch central infotainment touchscreen with 2K resolution, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support and a built-in karaoke function. The hut also floods much natural light thanks to what is said that it is the largest panoramic lunar in its class at 1.45 square meters. Level 2.5 ADAS functions are also included, including AEB, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist and more.
In terms of usability, the SUV has lowered 480 liters of boot room with five seats to 1,180 liters with the 60:40 split-fold back chairs. There is also a storage under the start -up floor, but that is taken by the spare wheel and the tire.
Because this is only a preview, the final prices are not yet available and the specifications can vary from the launch day. We can be heard that the J5 is estimated to be sold from RM120,000 and that customers can register all their interest. With that target price, the J5 is airing directly in the very competing B-segment SUV stroke field with a starting price well above the X50 and Tiggo cross. Do you think it has a chance?
