A total of 5,954 snakes were saved on Telangana between 1 January and 30 June 2025 by Friends of Snakes Society (FOS) in coordination with the Forest Department of Telangana. Of them, 56% (3,337) of them was toxic and the rest were non-venoumous, which were moved to suitable forestshabitats.

“The majority of rescues take place in Hyderabad and surrounding districts of medchal-malkajgiri, rangareddy, medak and hyderabad,” said Avinash Visvanathan, the secretary of FOS.

Under poisonous species, the Spectacled Cobra was responsible for most cases, with 2,970, followed by 344 Russell’s Vipers and 23 common Kraits. Non-toxic rescues often include species found such as the Indian rat snake, checkered throat back and bronze tree snake, along with rarer species such as the Indian Rock Python, Red Sand Boa and Barred Wolf Snake.

In addition to the rescue work, FOS had more than 200 workshops for snake consciousness and reached more than 40,000 people at schools, colleges, police and forest academies, public institutions and rural communities. The focus was on the ecological importance of snakes, safe practices during snake killing, first aid for snake bits and the disproving of prevailing myths. The 24/7 helpline number of the Society is 8374233366.
