2-year-old killed in Keeneland; Condolences to those responsible – Mistakes in horse racing

According to the card for the 6th at Keeneland yesterday, Gotta Lotta Tempo “suffered an injury, fell and was taken away in an ambulance.” The song followed this:

“There was an incident… involving Gotta Lotta Tempo and jockey Tyler Gaffalione. Both were immediately helped to the track. Due to the severity of the injury, humane euthanasia was chosen in the best interests of the horse. Tyler Gaffalione was assessed by UKHC medical staff and cleared to ride.”

That’s right, Gaffalione was allowed to continue his whipping; In fact, he was at it again in the next race – and three more after that. Keeneland concluded thus: “We extend our sincere condolences to the connections of Gotta Lotta Tempo.”

Condolences to the ‘connections’ – or indeed to the people who, along with those who financially support US Racing (bettors, patrons, viewers), responsible for the death of this poor girl (including the aforementioned Gaffalione). Despicable, but no more so than this reader comment on one of the racing rags:

“That’s just so terribly sad… A 2 year old girl, passed away before she even had a chance to live. I hope you rest peacefully, little one. At least that.”

“All deaths are horrible. But when it happens in a 2-year debut, it’s horrific.”

“RIP, poor filly.”

What more is there to say?
