13 tips about spa hotels, castles and country houses near Gothenburg – Travel Friday

Time for a weekend away with your partner or friends? Here I have collected a number of spa hotels, castles and country houses that are located within a reasonable distance from Gothenburg. I have stayed in most of them myself, the rest are on the bucket list for future visits.

Tips for spa hotels, castles and mansions (within reasonable distance of Gothenburg) for a weekend

#1. Jacy’z Hotel & Resort (Gothenburg Central)

If you want to combine a nice hotel with an equally nice spa experience, Jacy’z Hotel & Resort in central Gothenburg is a good option to consider. Here you can alternate your time between swimming pools, sunbeds and something tasty to eat by the fireplace. #2. Sankt Jörgen Spa

I don’t know how many times I’ve seen Sankt Jörgen Spa fly by in my feeds, but it’s a lot! This place clearly seems like a place where people return. The hotel building itself isn’t the nicest I’ve ever seen; what attracts instead are the 2000 square meter spa and sports club and the golf course (18 holes).

#3. Aspenäs Herrgård

I received a tip about Aspenäs Herrgård from an acquaintance a few years ago and immediately wrote the place down as a tip for future stays in Gothenburg. Apparently there must be good walking opportunities directly adjacent to the country house, I like to go here when it is green in the spring (even though the winter photos also look nice).

#4. Nääs Fabriker Hotel and Restaurant

Nääs Fabriker Hotell and Restaurant in Tollered is a destination hotel that attracts all year round! In addition to the hotel itself, the old factory section also contains shops, a restaurant, a café, offices and various other companies. The entire area exudes small scale and local entrepreneurship, the hotel is beautifully designed and the view over Lake Sävelången is cute. Next to the hotel there is a small bathhouse with various sauna concepts, hot baths and jetties for guests who want to bathe. #5. Hjortviken Country Club (Hindas)

The relatively newly opened Hjortviken Country Club hotel became a big talking point when it opened its doors in early 2025. Hjortviken belongs to ESS Group’s collection of destination hotels (which also includes the aforementioned Jacy’z) and offers a holistic experience for guests. The interior style has been thought out down to the smallest detail – if you have been to any of the other hotels of the ESS Group, you will recognize yourself. In the spa there are two heated pools, fire relaxation and a sauna available for those checking in.

#6. Varberg’s City Hotel & Asia Spa

It is not possible to write a post about spa hotels near Gothenburg without mentioning Asia Spa in Varbergs Stadshotell. I consider this place one of the best spa facilities in Sweden. It cannot be a coincidence that Varberg is one of the absolute most beautiful towns in Sweden.

#7. Thorskog Castle

I’ve seen several updates of this beautiful castle dream outside Gothenburg in my feeds over the years. Here, in Västerlanda, I like to drop by when the snow has powdered on the roof for the ultimate gingerbread castle feeling! #8. Bjertorp Castle

A real castle in the middle of Varaslätten? Wow! A short distance outside Skara lies Bjertorp Castle, enthroned in all its brick splendor. The architect behind the castle is Ferdinand Boberg and was also credited with designing the NK House, Rosenbad and Prince Eugen’s Waldemarsudde in Stockholm. #9. Smögens Hafvsbad

Smögens Hafvsbad is clearly a place to return to. There are few places I’d rather huddle than here when fall storms blow around the house. The hotel is located in an old wooden building from the 20th century with a beautiful view of the Skagerrak. Unsurprisingly, the hotel’s restaurant specializes in seafood dishes.

#10. Marstrand’s Sea Hotel

There are a range of very good hotels along the west coast, of which Marstrands Havshotell must of course be one. It is undoubtedly a special feeling to stand in the hotel room at Varvskajen and watch the sun set over Marstrand on the other side of the water. The hotel also has a nice spa department to aim for.

#11. Gullmarsstrand Hotel & Conference

Gullmarsstrand in unspoilt Fiskebäckskil is another west coast gem worth remembering and definitely an addition to your hotel bookings. My husband and I have been here both with and without the kids in tow. The hotel is in the best possible location overlooking the Gullmarsfjord and the relaxation area offers panoramic views.

#12. Stromstad Spa & Resort

Strömstad Spa also deserves a place on this tip list of spa hotels and country houses near Gothenburg. My husband still holds this as one of his favorite hotels in Sweden. The sea, the location and the atmosphere, this place is a pleasure from start to finish. Expect a whole group of Norwegians to join you at the hotel – they seem to love this place too.
