A winter trip to the Alps has so much to offer. When you travel to Vorarlberg in Austria, you can actually do so much more than just skiing. A trip with extra of everything. Good food, drinks, beautiful hotel, skiing, tobogganing and meeting alpacas. Meeting alpacas was also love at first sight.
1. Go skiing in Silvretta/Montafon
Silvretta Montafon has 140 kilometers of slopes, 35 trails and lifts and an area that extends up to 2,430 meters above sea level. We took the Panoramabahn to the top to 2,375 meters above sea level, the day we went skiing there. Unfortunately, the weather prevented the beautiful panoramic view, which I saw in both photos and films. Silvretta Montafon is one of the most sporty ski areas in Vorarlberg and several ski competitions also take place here during the winter season.
We lived in Shruns and the Hochjoch I and II cable car then took us up to 1,857m H and then we continued into most of the ski system and slopes. Unfortunately we were unlucky with the weather on the winter day we were there, but I can imagine what it would have been like with clear blue skies and sparkling snow.

- Prices: Ski pass A day in Silvretta Montafon costs about 60 euros for a day 2025/2026.
- Season: The Silvretta Montafon season runs from the end of November to the beginning of April.
- Rent skis: We rented skis at Intersport in Schruns.

2. Stay at Aktiv & Spa Hotel Alpenrose in Vorarlberg
Hotel Alpenrose is a family-run and cozy Alphotel located in Montafon, in eastern Austria. When we were on a sports holiday in Austria, we spent our first two nights here. We lived in a large, beautiful family room with two bedrooms, a living room and a beautiful balcony overlooking the beautiful mountains.

When we lived at Alpenrose, we had half board and that included a 6-course dinner in the evening. The six-course dinner consisted of a delicious salad buffet with butter and bread, starter, soup, main course, dessert and finally a delicious cheese buffet. Fantastically good.

3. No from the spa after a full day on the ski slopes
Alpenrose offers a large and beautiful relaxing spa and relaxation area. The spa department has two swimming pools, a larger one and a jacuzzi.
There is a relaxation area by the pool and also a sunbathing area with beds where you can lie down and enjoy with a beautiful view of the nearby nature and the beautiful mountain peaks. If you would like to have a massage or other treatment, there was a selection of treatments you could book.

4. Walk with alpacas – a loving animal
When we were in Vorarlberg in the Alps we walked with alpacas Montafon alpacas One morning. There is actually so much more fun to do in the Alps than skiing. It’s also fun to do something different. This excursion can be booked three times a week with Daniela, who runs Monfon Alpakas.

It’s a very nice lady called Daniela, who runs this alpaca farm in Gaschurn in Vorarlberg. She was incredibly skilled and loving with the alpacas.

5. Go skiing in Sonnenkopf
Of course you want to ski in sunny Sonnenkopf when you are in Vorarlberg. Jokes and side dishes, but we were really lucky with the weather when we were there Sun head. The word Sonne means sun in German and it is said to be a sunny ski resort!

This child-friendly ski area is located on the famous Arlberg massif. Sonnenkopf boasts an ideal altitude of up to 2,300 meters.

The fact that the ski area is so high provides good access to snow, making Sonnenkopf one of the few ski areas with reliable snow conditions with natural snow. Even in late spring there is a high chance of natural snow thanks to the topography. We were very grateful for that! The snow and skiing were really great here.
Sonnenkopf has “only” 30 kilometers of slopes! But absolutely perfect backs for a family or beginner, as well as for the average skater.

- Skidhyra: We rented skis at Intersport just below Sonnenkopf Kabinbana.
- LIFT TICKET PRICES: A full day ski pass costs 55 euros for adults and 32 euros for children (ski season 2025/2026). So it is still quite affordable compared to other alporters.

6. Åk Toboggan in Sonnenkopf
We rented toboggans at the same place where we rented the skis. Then we took the cabin lift up, where the travel rail started.
The Rod Rabout started at 1840 m Ö H and descended to the main station at 1580 m.

A very nice experience, but you had to be a bit careful, because it goes at a breakneck pace. You may not think it will happen that quickly. In other words: it was a great adventure for the whole family!

7. Stay at Hotel Alpine Lodge in Klösterle
We stayed at Hotel Alpine Lodge in Klösterle. A smaller family hotel that had apartments, but also served breakfast. Just outside the door the bus went to Sonnenkopf, where we went skiing.

The hotel also had a smaller relaxation area, where you could lie in comfortable beds and look out over the Alps and Basta.

8. Take a guided light walk in Klösterle
We took a short guided light walk with Anna from the local tourist office. She showed us around the village.

– Nice restaurants in Vorarlberg –
Vorarlberg has many good and nice restaurants. We ate mainly Austrian specialties, because it’s always nice to eat local food when you’re in another country.
9. Have lunch at Gasthaus Löwen Tschagguns
Gasthaus Löwen is a local restaurant located in Tschagguns in the valley. Here you immediately get an Austrian feeling when you enter through the gate. The waiters serve the food in beautiful Austrian clothing and the food is also typically Austrian. We enjoy specialties from the region.

10. Dine in Sankt Josefsheim – nice restaurant in Schruns
We had dinner our second evening in Austria Saint Josefsheim I Schruns. Vorarlberg.
It is a more trendy and modern restaurant with an Austrian touch. Here, a salad with chicken fillet is recommended as a starter. Then classic spare ribs with barbecue sauce, split potatoes and corn on the cob or a truly real Austrian schnitzel with fries as a main course. Don’t miss their good panna cotta with mango sorbet and berries.

11. ÄT dinner at the Monastery Talenthof Chlösterle
The Klostertalerhof Is like an Austrian inn with Austrian dishes, but with a more exclusive touch. It is a nice restaurant located in the hotel of the same name in the cozy little mountain village of Klösterle. Here an Austrian classic is recommended with Austrian sausage or their hamburger plate. Perfect after a whole day on skis.

For dessert we had sorbet served with candy sugar, which looked both cool and trendy.

12. Wirtschaft Traube – A great Michelin restaurant in Klösterle
Economy grape is a small family restaurant in Klösterle in Vorarlberg in Austria. They are Tanja and Tobias Schöpf who both own and run this cute little restaurant.
Wirtschaft Traube has only 26 seats. We reserved a table at the end of February at half past seven and were all alone in the restaurant. But it only lasts an hour, so the restaurant is completely full. It was probably just us who were hungry and stuck in lockdown when the restaurant opened.

They have 5 different dishes. Then their menu is often replaced. Their cooking is creative and intuitive. They work with what nature offers them and the producers are ready for that. 5 dishes that function as a menu, but can also be ordered separately. If you want, you can eat a 5-course menu, or order all dishes separately. We ate two dishes from the menu and thought it was like dinner.

When it comes to accessories such as wine and drinks, they rely on wines from selected vineyards. They also change regularly and combine suitable wines with what comes from the kitchen. There are also fine spirits from Vorarlberg, homemade kombucha, lemonades, teas and cocktails, mainly made with ingredients that they grow themselves or get from nature.
And then their home-made bread with different types of home-made herb butter, with herbs that they have grown themselves. I ate a catfish with horseradish and asparagus and caviar.

Travel to Vorarlberg
We flew to Zurich. Then we took the train from Zurich to Schruns, with a change. It is easy and convenient to buy train tickets online and they are valid for 24 hours. So it doesn’t make much sense if the flight is delayed, you can take another train.
