The Saharanpur government in Uttar Pradesh demolished a mosque on Friday and called it an “illegal structure”. Civil servants said the mosque was built without the necessary approvals, including a sanctioned map.

An officer said that a notification was sent to the mosque administration to get the card approved, but the construction continued.

Subodh Kumar, a Saharanpur official, who justified the action of the administration, said: “It was an illegal construction that has now been removed. The structure was built without permission and without an approved map. An notification was given to get them the card approved, but the construction was taken against all the illegal structure”

However, the move led to a political fiasco. Saharanpur Congress MP Imran Masood doubted the legality of the action and claimed that the correct procedure was not followed.

“How is the mosque illegal? The people built it on their own country. They even informed the administration. In a village, where does the concept of a map even come in?” Said Masood.

He further claimed that no good notification was served.

“Even a 15 -day notification was not given. Was there a hearing about the notification? No procedure was followed, they just demolished the mosque. We did not start protesting, because if we had done that, they would have shot us in the chest. So we will present our case legally,” he added.
