From Saturday, March 1, the Mastio della Cittadella – National Historical Museum of Artillery of Turin is organizing the project produced by Navigare SRL with the patronage of the Piedmont region and the city of Turin.
More than 160 works, on loan of Italian, French and Belgian private collections, and from some French and Italian museum collections, will bring together woodcuts, drawings and lithographs of Gauguin, together with two works attributed to him: the oil on Canvas Tahiti’s wife (1891) and the watercolor Tahitian landscape.

The central core of the exhibition is displayed by 23 precious woodcuts of the Noa Noa Diary (1893-94), a fascinating story written by the artist during his first stay in French Polynesia, enriched by his illustrations made with the old technique of incision on wood, printed by Daniel de Monfreet. There is no shortage of lithographic prints in facsimile included in Before and afterThe last book written by Gauguin and ended two months before dying (1903). A sort of posthumous manifest-diary, full of notes and considerations about art and friendship relationships.

In addition to focusing on life in Tahiti, the path does not neglect the relationships of the painter with the Western world, with France, and with his colleagues and artists’ friends. The exhibition also embraces a core of 45 works, including drawings, engravings and paintings made by thirteen illustrious masters of the French art of the nineteenth century, by the friend Vincent van Gogh, of which 12 colors of lithographs can be seen against Jean-François Millet with the Ottquame L’Engel. The artists of the Nabis group Pont-Aven, in Brittany, can not miss another place that decides for Gauguin’s life. Maurice Denis will be shown with his religious theme -lithographs, while the series of six six -lithographic lithographs Bretonnières is exhibited by Émile Bernard together with his own cardboard oil.

The exhibition can be visited until 29 June from Tuesday to Friday from 9.30 am to 6.30 pm. Saturday, Sunday and vacation from 9.30 am to 7.30 pm. Closed on Monday.
