When Geoff Percival collapsed into cardiac arrest and his partner was called Triple-0, it was not a paramedic who was the first responder; It was neighbor Ashlin Fisher.

A few months earlier, the young mother from Broulee on the South Coast of New South Wales had downloaded the NSW Ambulance’s Goodsam Responder request to her phone.

The time had come to put it to the test.

“It is a very loud, alarming alert … and I realized what it was and I had to run out the door,” said Mrs. Fisher.

When she arrived in March last year, the 63-year-old was unconscious and his partner was Cardiopulmonal CPR (CPR).

“I explained as well as possible who I was and what I was … I asked her to post the phone on the speaker … and very quickly I didn’t have to make real decisions, Triple-0 just gave me instructions about what I had to do,” she said.

The hectic Triple-0 call took the moment that Mrs. Fisher arrived, where the operator replied: “We have a goods here? Ok, okay … We are a maximum of 300 compressions, I need you to continue until that ambulance arrives.”

While Mrs. Fisher counted the compression next to the operator, ambulances sirens scaled in the background and within two minutes there was a paramedic in the room.

Then the operator said: “Is that the paramedic on stage with you? Okay, I’ll leave you behind, you’ve done it all very well now, the very best now.”

Ashlin Fisher laughs at the camera while she is inawths in the background. Her husband lifts their daughter.

Rewer and patient’s reunion

Mr Percival recently had the opportunity to thank his good Samaritan.

“I just think it was so happy that she could respond. [My partner] Was resuscitation to me … and Ashlin came by and I think you said, “Can I take it over?” And she said, “Yes, please,” he said.

“It was good to let a third person come in and to have an idea what to do until the paramedics arrived.

“I think Ashlin is quite important in the fact that I am still there.“

According to NSW ambulance, an average of nine to 10 minutes is needed a paramedic to reach a heart attack.

The Goodsam app is intended to bridge that gap and is available to everyone aged 18 or older and able to perform CPR.

If necessary, an alarm goes on the phone’s phone and the person is asked if he can help. If they can, they will receive the address of the patient together with the location of a nearby defibrillator.

A volunteer in every street

Goodsam started in NSW in 2023 and so far around 9,600 volunteers have registered.

NSW Ambulance Goodsam Project Officer Monika Sitkowski said that volunteers had given CPR to 54 patients who had survived.

“We know that for every minute someone does not receive CPR, his chances of survival are decreasing by 7 to 10 percent,”

Mrs. Sitkowski said.

“They don’t get oxygen in their vital organs, especially their brains, so we need volunteers who are nearby to start that resuscitation and keep them alive until paramedics arrive.

“[GoodSam] Is about saving your neighbors. It’s about saving your friends and family. There is a huge increase in survival when you have early resuscitation for that person in need. “

NSW ambulance said it aimed for 50,000 registered volunteers in the entire state.

“That would probably mean that there is a freight response nearby for every person who goes into a cardiac arrest,” said Mrs. Sitkowski.

Versions of the Goodsam app are also used in South Australia and Victoria, while St John ambulance in West -Australia has a similar app.
