Memphis Grizzlies Center Zach Edey is expected to miss some time at the start of the 2025-26 season after an operation for a sprained ankle, ESPN reported on Saturday.

After a solid Rookie season, Edeey was injured earlier this week during training outside the season.

“After consultation with the Grizzlies and several specialists, we have decided that this is the best approach for Zach in the long term, because it brings him back to 100 percent without limitations,” said Edey’s agent Mark Bartelstein, via ESPN. “He will fully recover and return better than ever,”

The Grizzlies selected the 7-foot-4 center with the ninth general choice in the NBA version of 2024 after a phenomenal university career at Purdue. He was named the Naismith College Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons and became the first player to perform the performance since Ralph Sampson (1982-83).

As Rookie, Edey turned out to be a crucial presence for the play-off-bound Grizzlies, an average of 9.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in just 21.5 minutes per game. He started 55 games.

In the first round of the play -offs against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Edey was productive in game 4, with eight points, eight rebounds and seven blocks. He was the first rookie ever to take up that minima in a play -off game while he played 33 minutes or less.
