The pumping of iron can give you a greater risk of suddenly falling to your death, an important study of 20,000 bodybuilders has unveiled.
Researchers discovered that those who had built up extreme muscle levels during their lives had twice as much chance of dying of sudden heart death compared to the general population.
In the meantime, those who participated in regular bodybuilding competitions have such as ‘Mr Olympia’ title holders such as Arnold SchwarzeneggerSaw the risk of shock-dead five-time increase compared to their amateur counterparts.
Alarming, about 40 percent of the dead among all the bodybuilders studied were suddenly and heart -related.
The authors suggested that their figures could be an underestimation, because many deaths were mentioned as ‘unknown’.
Dr. Marco Vecchiato, an expert in sports medicine from the University of Padova and author of the study, said that analysis of autopsy reports suggested that a combination of factors was to blame.
“Bodybuilding includes various practices that can have an impact on health, such as extreme strength training, rapid strategies for weight loss, including serious food restrictions and dehydration.”
He also marked the dangers of the ‘widespread use of various performance -enhancing substances’.
The risk was even higher for professional bodybuilders, such as’ Mr. The title holders of Olympia such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, who were more than five times more likely to have a sudden cardiac death than their hobbyist or amateur opposite hits. Schwarzenegger, depicted here in Los Angles in February of this year, won the MR Olympia competition seven times in 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, and eventually in 1980
“These approaches can put a considerable pressure on the cardiovascular system, increase the risk of irregular heart rhythm and can lead to structural heart changes over time.”
Earlier studies have suggested that a maximum of three in four bodybuilders have used performance -improving medicines, such as steroids – known to put on extra tension.
“Although the pursuit of physical excellence is admirable, the pursuit of extreme body transformation can cause significant health risks, especially for the heart,” Dr. Vecchiato.
“Awareness of these risks should encourage safer training practices, improved medical supervision and another cultural approach that strongly rejects the use of performance -improving substances.”
He also encouraged stronger anti-doping rules for competitions, as well as campaigns under the sporting community on the dangers of the use of performance-enhancing substances.
Dr. Vecchiato added that the research was a reminder that, regardless of how healthy someone looked, they can deal with behavior that endangers them.
“The research challenges the idea that appearance is only an indicator for health and emphasizes the hidden risks that can exist behind even the most sculpted physique,” he said.

The impact of steroids on bodybuilders and gyms in general was recently emphasized by the case of the 32-year-old Zak Wilkinson
However, he added that the findings should not be understood as proof that bodybuilding, or any other type of fitness, was inherently harmful.
“Regular physical activity and strength training can be extremely beneficial for health, quality of life and death risk.”
A sudden heart death is not a specific medical condition, but rather a description of unexpected downfall due to a hidden heart issue.
This can be a sudden heart attack without earlier symptoms or a congenital heart defect that had unnoticed since someone was born.
The impact of steroids on bodybuilders and gymgoers was recently emphasized by the case of the 32-year-old Zak Wilkinson.
Mr. Wilkinson turned to steroids as a growing number of young men, who simulate the role of the natural hormone testosterone to stimulate his muscle growth.
But this was wrong for his health, and he began to have placed epileptic seizures, vomiting and sweating in an induced coma at some point.
Dokici have told the father of one that he probably has complications for the rest of his days.

Mr. Wilkinson had to be placed in a medically induced coma after the side effects of years of steroid use
Anabolic-androgenic steroids are the most common type of image and performance-enhancing medicines.
They are usually injected directly into the muscle, but can also be taken orally in tablet form or even as a cream.
Common side effects are serious acne, kidney failure, high cholesterol and even stroke.
Another finding of the new study was that a considerable number of fatalities at Bodybuilders was what researchers classified ‘sudden traumatic deaths’.
This included incidents such as car accident, suicides, murders and overdoses.
Dr. Vecchiato said that this data suggested that there was a need for more awareness and support for mental health care at the bodybuilding community.
“These findings underline the need to tackle the psychological impact of bodybuilding culture,” he said.
“These challenges in the field of mental health, sometimes worsen with substance abuse and can increase the risk of impulsive or self -destructive behavior.”
In the study, published in the European Heart JournalResearchers investigated the data of 20,286 bodybuilders who had been active in at least one official event between 2005 and 2020.
After analyzing the data, they discovered that a total of 121 athletes had died, with an average age at the death of 45.
The team is now planning a similar study of female bodybuilders to investigate whether they also experience an increased risk of sudden heart death.
