Australian story Next week, the first of a two -part story will screen on the race to free a Lithuanian truss in Tasmanian waters.

When a Lithuanian was caught in the stream of Tasmania on the Franklin River of Tasmania at the end of last year, it made the headlines all over the world. Now the Australian story can reveal dramatic details of the 24-hour rescue attempt, based on never-before-seen images taken by rescuers and the fellow trusses.

When the emergency services were first warned that a man had slipped and was in fast -running water on his chest, they thought it would be a relatively simple task to remove him. But it became one of the most complex rescue missions in the history of Tasmania.

“How does someone’s leg go in a crack and doesn’t come out; as if there is certainly a way, there is always a way,” paramedic Rohan tells the Australian story. “And that wasn’t.”

During two episodes, Australian Story offers a heartbreaking report of the rescue mission, while rescuers and doctors race against the clock to free the leg of the Rabter.

As the hours passed and the caught struggled became dangerously hypothermic, rescuers had to take into account the possibility of amputation. “I felt so conflict,” says Rohan. “I should never hurt anyone to save his life. If this continues, you might be able to kill him. But even if it all goes perfectly, he will never be the same man again.”

With all the rescue attempts that failed, the decision was made to ampute. And then there was some rescuers ‘calling an incident within an incident’. The doctor who prepared to perform the difficult operation slid on the wet rock and broke his wrist.

With the prison state of the prisoners, quickly deteriorated and a replacement doctor’s way away, the hope began to fade.

Australian Story Interviewed Rescuers, Medical Personnel and De Spanten, In Tasmania and Lithuania, to offer a nail -biting anatomy of an amazing mission.
