Milton, Mass. (WHDH) – The Massachusetts Department of Public Health is investigating Botox injections in a Milton Spa after at least 12 cases of presumably botulism.
Jamie Pelton says that she has been going to Rodrigo Beauty on Granite Avenue for five years and has never had problems with Botox until her most recent visit on 8 May.
“It’s extremely scary,” Pelton said. “Let me wonder why he even put us all in the first place.”
Two days later she ended up in the hospital.
“I noticed that there was something else because it was extremely painful,” Pelton said. “I had to call 911 because I was dizzy.”
According to DPH, Iatrogenic Botulism is a rare but serious disease caused by botulinum toxin – botox – that spreads beyond the injection site. It can see blurry, hanging eyelids, unclear speech and breathing difficulties.
Health officials warn that some symptoms can be life threatening.
“Even after the narcotic cream I still cried and he had to give me a tissue and in the end I just tapped,” Pelton said.
Since DPH has issued his public notification on suspected Iatrogenic botulism -cases in the facility, the sign outside of Rodrigo cleaning has been removed. The website has been removed and the spa is now mentioned as “permanently closed” on Google.
DPH advises that Botox is generally safe, but adds: “DPH continues to emphasize the importance of searching for cosmetic procedures only of recognized professionals in accredited medical institutions.”
Pelton says she thinks of other clients who have had similar symptoms.
“I wonder about the other people, what they are going through, how bad they are,” said Pelton.
Everyone who had Botox injections on Rodrigo Beauty will be encouraged to contact the DPH on 617-983-6800 between 1 May and 4 June of this year. The facility did not respond to a request for comments.
