Airtel has announced the government and Regulator Trai that the Reliance Jio and Vodafone idea has approached with a proposal for a joint initiative to unite the industry against rising telecom fraud and scams.
Airtel has also urged all telco’s to work together and collectively tackle the growing threat of misleading and malignant scams that focus on vulnerable individuals.
In separate letters to the telco’s it mentioned data that India recorded more than 1.7 million complaints of cyber crime in the first nine months of 2024, resulting in financial losses of more than £ 11,000 crore.
The call for action comes at a time when cyber criminals use increasingly advanced tactics such as phishing left, fake loan offers and fraudulent payment pages, which leads to an increase in digital fraud and identity theft incidents.
Airtel has increased the Ante in the war against digital spam and scams, and the last few weeks have seen the Telco-rolled out fraud detection solution led by Sunil Mittal-rolled out to block rogue sites on communication OTT apps and platforms, including WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, Instagram and others.

Airtel Update the telecom department and trai on its efforts, Airtel said that to combat “this growing threat” of telecomfraud, spam and scams and in the spirit of uniform industrial action, it has again reached with telecom service providers (TSPs) with a proposal to be lanced on May 14, May 205.
“This initiative would bring together all TSPs to merge, prevent and reduce telecomfraud and scams in our networks by real-time parts of fraud intelligence and cross-network coordination,” Airtel said in the letters.
Airtel recalled that in October 2024 it had written all telecom providers with a proposal to use a cooperation approach to tackle the growing issue of unsolicited commercial communication (UCC).
The proposal emphasized the mutual parts of details of business connections used for commercial calling in a standardized format to enable proactive spam monitoring and to limit potential abuse.
“We have also proposed the creation of a centralized platform for sharing data, similar to the existing distributed ledger technology system to improve our collective ability to combat UCC without disturbing legitimate business services,” Airtel said.
