Flamingos head coach Bankole Olowookere has said that participation in the National Sports Festival 2024 offered him the opportunity to discover new players for the team.

The Olowookere side is part of the independent junior athletes, IJA, team that is currently participating in the Gateway Games in Ogun State.

The flamingos are already ready to the semi -final of the women’s football event where they take hosts Ogun State on Sunday.

De Gaffer said it is important for him to strengthen the team prior to FIFA U-17 Ladies World Cup 2025 in Morocco.

“Big plus in terms of developing the players. If we don’t have the sports festival, some of these players will not have the chance to play for the team. It would also not have been possible to discover the exceptional talents we have here at the moment,” Olowookere said.

“We have invited eight new players to strengthen the team, one or two of them have done well so far. Grace from Fortress Ladies and the other girl from FC Robo, Maryam. They have been exceptional. With more rigorous training they will be able to prevent more in the team.

“Moreover, we have seen players from other teams such as Abia, although the team did not do well. We saw a keeper in their team.

“In Lagos we have two players there. We will invite them when we start preparing for the World Cup. There are other players outside.

“I’m still going to move through the country and look at other tournaments, so to see some of these girls and to give them the opportunity to fight for a place in the team.”
