At least 16 people have been booked for taking an unauthorized route and violating police barricades during a Muharram procession in the Ujjain of Madhya Pradesh in the early hours of Sunday (July 6, 2025), leading to injuries to various police staff, said civil servants.
According to the police, the incident took place around 3.45 pm when a large group of participants reportedly forced a ceremonial horse by police -Barricades near the Khajurwadi Masjid under the jurisdiction of the Jiwajiganj police station, resulting in the collaboration of both the barricades and the horse.
An alleged video of the incident appeared on social media, supposedly a group of young people who wear sticks and jump over the cases of barricades. The video also seems to show that the horse collapses and the police resort to a sturking costs to spread the crowd.
City Superintendent of Police (Jiwajiganj) Sumit Agrawal told The Hindu That the ceremonial horse belonged to an Irfan -Alias Lalla, who was mentioned in the FIR together with 15 non -inspired persons. The case is registered under sections 191 (1) (2), 121 (1) and 132 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
“At least four to five of our staff were injured in the incident. They were given treatment and X-rays were made. We also had to resort to what Lathi-Affairs to manage the situation,” said Mr. Agrawal, adding that the procession was subsequently completed along the pre-decided security regulations.
“The procession is closed around 1 p.m. [Sunday]. We now work to arrest Irfan and identify the other persons involved in the incident, “he said.
Mr. Agrawal said that a meeting with local community leaders was held in the police control room a few days earlier, where the route for the procession was completed and was confirmed on Saturday (July 6, 2025) morning.
“That is why we had Barricades-It was not part of the agreed route at that time. But some individuals deliberately distracted the procession and violated the barricades to create a nuisance. This seems to be planned in advance,” he said.
“The situation is now normal and there is no tension in the area. However, we remain alert and sufficient security implementation has been made to prevent an undesirable incident,” Mr Agrawal added.
Maksood Ali, a local congress leader and organizer of a Muharram procession in a neighboring place, demanded strict action against those responsible for the infringement.
“The procession was eliminated on the ninth day of Muharram. According to the route it was to go straight ahead, but some people distracted it to the police -Barricades on their way to Geeta Colony. These people tried to enter with violence. If someone had objections. If someone had objections. [to the route]They should have expressed their concern during the meeting in the police control room, “Mr Ali, who is also the joint secretary of the Eid Miladunnabi Juloos Committee, told reporters.
“This is how they become a smiling stock and Lathi is taken to them. Action must be taken against those who are responsible for this, as well as those present during the meeting, because they did not succeed in guaranteeing compliance with the route,” he added.
