India is preparing to launch a USD 234 million (more than RS 2,000 Crore) stimulation program to stimulate its domestic drone that make capacity for civil and military sectors, according to a report from Reuters who are familiar with the issue. The move comes in the midst of the increasing use of drones in conflicts around the world and an escalating arms race with neighboring Pakistan and other opponents such as China and Turkey. The program will take three years and offer financial assistance for producing drones, components, software, counter-drone technologies and allied services, according to the Reuters report.
What inspired the project?
The focus of India on unmanned aircraft (UAVs) comes after a four -day conflict with Pakistan at the beginning of May, which the first time marked the first time that both nuclear countries used intensive drones against each other. The confrontation is seen as the most important reason for the push of New Delhi to scale up domestic drone production. “During (the India-Pakistan) conflict there was quite a lot of use of drones, which kept ammunition and kamikaze drones on both sides,” said Indian Minister of Defense Rajesh Kumar Singh last week. “The lesson we have learned is that we have to double our indigenous efforts to ensure that we build a large, effective, military drone production system.”
What is the Project Time Line?
The new initiative will be led by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, with the support of the Ministry of Defense. The project is intended to ensure that at least 40 percent of the most important drone components are manufactured in India by the end of the financial year. This would reduce the current dependence on India of imported parts, many of which still come from China, despite a ban on importing complete drones.
