Kelly Williams returned the role of a heartbreaking championship more than ten years ago and eventually kept the Grand Slam of TNT alive and well.
This time Williams sank two pressure-packaged free throws that enabled the Tropang 5G to survive the Magnolia Hotshots, 80-79, on Saturday to guarantee a trip to the PBA Philippine Cup-Halve Final.
“First of all, mine was really a mistake,” Williams told the researcher after the exciting quarter -final rubber competition in the middle of the heavy downstood outside Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Williams referred to pollution by Ian Sangalang with two more seconds, because he went for a tip after the four-point attempt by Jordan Rights of the Incoming. A 56 percent free throw shooter, the veteran both converted to put TNT in the front again.
TNT would deny Magnolia the chance to win at the subsequent game, which completed a hard -fought result, despite the entering the quarterfinals that his opponent had to beat twice after he had not reached the top four.
Williams was one of the heroes of the competition, and the way in which he was in charge was somehow as a poetic justice.
In Game 7 of the final of the Commissioner Cup 2012, Williams was called for a disputed error on Denzel Bowles with a second links of the decision maker between TNT and Magnolia, then known as B-meg.
Bowles would make two dirty shots that forced overtime, and B-meg would win the crown.
“To be honest, that [incident] Was not nearly in my mind, “said Williams, who said that his most urgent concern about the crucial moment of the game was to get the rebound after the Miss off the head.
“I know my role is to make sure that when a shooter shoots, [I’m ready if it misses]Whether it is another possession or a putback, just like in that situation. And just like what I said, I want to honor coach Chot because he trusted me because he brought me back when he came back [as TNT coach].
“Making those free throws was part of that,” said the 43-year-old center.
Polluted at the back
TNT will be confronted with complex or rain or sunshine in a best-of-sevent semi-final series that starts on Wednesday and can be played in Mall or Asia Arena. The Road Warriors and Elasto painters relied the last semifinal in the press at the time of the pressure.
The Tropang 5G almost came close to seeing their triple Kroonbid, so that a 74-67 lead was spread in the fourth and then allowed the Ian Sangalang of the Hotshots to score an open layout, with the time to six seconds, that TNT remained behind a point.
Reyes prepared a play to go for an outer shot. The Lefty Guard missed and Williams went for a tip after the Miss, before officials blew a whistle after they were contaminated at the back by Rafi Reavis.
And that was the stage for Williams to extend the historical search from TNT to at least another round.
