Sergio Ramos, the 39-year-old Spanish football star, then scored Montrey 1-1 with Inter Milan in their opening club World Cup Group e-match in Pasadena on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
With that goal, Sergio Ramos entered the history books as the oldest goal scorer in the FIFA Club World Cup history.
Lautaro Martinez scored the equalizer for Inter Milan, who still recovered from their heavy 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final. About 40,000 fans were in the Rose Bowl Stadium to watch the competition.
Inter had most of the ball and spent a lot of time attacking, but could not change that into goals.
Monterrey was happy with the point. They are now preparing for the river plate of Argentina on Saturday.
“If you don’t win, you can’t be completely happy,” said Ramos, a former Spain and Real Madrid defender. “But one point is better than none. Inter is a strong team – they were in the Champions League final. We were a bit nervous in the beginning, but we improved in the second half.”
Inter -coach Cristian Chivu, who led the team for the first time after Simone Inzaghi had left, said that Monterrey was difficult to break.
“We played well in the first half, even though we went behind,” said Chivu. “We could have done better after the break. It’s hard to play against a team that defends so deeply.”
He also said that Inter Monterrey took seriously: “We respect every opponent. We knew what kind of team they were. We gave our best. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Football is not won on paper.”
Match Summary:
Inter was the better side early. Benjamin Pavard had the first chance in the 8th minute, and Matteo Darmian missed a good chance in the 22nd minute.
But Monterrey took the lead in the 25th minute. Oliver Torres sent a corner and Ramos, unarkly behind, left the ball in the bottom corner.
Inter came back strongly. Monterrey -goalkeeper Esteban Andrarada made a key saving to stop Sebastiano Esposito. Martinez also went close before Inter called on a penalty when the ball hit Ramos on the arm. VAR decided it was not a handball.
Only a few minutes later, Inter scored with a smart free kick. Kristjan Asllani broke the ball about the defense of Monterrey, Carlos Augusto gave him over and Martinez tapped him 1-1.
Monterrey almost scored again in the 64th minute when Sergio Canales hit the post. Inter thought they had taken the lead shortly thereafter, but the goal of Martinez was ruled outdoor.
In extra time, Monterrey almost grabbed a late winner, but Nelson Deossa’s shot hit the nets of the side.
