Busy working mother Jenna Borthwick could always find a reasonable explanation to feel under the weather; She was tired, it was her period, it was just another flu of the nursery.
But in reality she was one of the thousands of young Britons not knowing that they live with deadly colon cancer.
The 31-year-old, from the Scottish borders, post TapUnveiled one bit of crucial ‘wrong information’ that people can prevent from taking their symptoms seriously.
In a series of images entitled ‘Symptoms that led to my diagnosis of colon cancer in March 2025’, she is in more detail about how it was discovered that she had an advanced stage of the disease.
She wrote: ‘So many people who asked what my symptoms were: some of the fatigue/cramps/and catching a cold can be traced back for a good number of months, but it is so easy to pin it on something else.
‘Difficult working mom? Of course I am tired. Cramps? Must get my period! Why do I catch every cold/flu that goes around? Must be my toddlers who come home from the nursery! ‘
She continued that it was only a few months before her formal diagnosis that more physical symptoms started to rise, and she thanks her doctor for taking her worries seriously and agreeing that “something is not quite right.”
In summary how she was “constantly sick in the run -up to my diagnosis,” said Mrs. Borthwick that she needed the toilet every time she ate, had blood in her faeces, had abdominal cramps and had the feeling that she had to empty her intestines constantly.

“The other symptoms only started two/three months prior to my diagnosis and I actually went to my doctor fairly quickly,” she added.
‘I was very lucky that she performed tests early and she knew something was not quite right.
“However, we thought it was piles to start with, and then inflammatory bowel disorders because I think the symptoms are very similar.”
Mrs Borthwick then unveiled the common piece of incorrect information that could cost lives.
She said: ‘People always told me that bright red blood was not worried and that dark blood you had to pay attention to, this is so wrong. Get all the type of blood in your poop checked. ‘
Because of the blood in her faeces, Mrs. Borthwick was referred for a colonoscopy – where a thin flexible camera is inserted into the rectum – by her doctor who wanted to exclude disorders such as Crohn’s disease, a kind of inflammatory intestinal disorders.
But during this first study it was that doctors discovered a ‘tumor so great that it was almost a full intestinal obstruction – and things started to escalate quickly.
Mrs. Borthwick remembered: ‘I was boss at work on Monday, told me that I had allowed cancer on Tuesday, had allowed in the hospital on Wednesday, and [had] Surgery the Thursday. ‘

Her cancer turned out to be stage 3 an advanced stage, which means that while the cancer has started spreading, it should not achieve far away parts of the body.
Mrs. Borthwick underwent an eight -hour operation to remove the mass from the left side of her intestine.
Although the operation was a success, she must undergo a four -month chemotherapy, to try to eliminate all remaining traces of the cancer.
Before she started the treatment, Mrs. Borthwick told her followers that she underwent an egg -search procedure in the Edinburgh Fertility Clinic, so that she and her husband could hopefully fulfill their dream of a third child.
Her case comes in the midst of a relevant and mysterious rise in colon cancer in less than 50s.
A recent worldwide study showed that the percentages of colon cancer in fewer than 50-year-olds rise in 27 of the 50 countries.
England is on average an increase of 3.6 percent in younger adults every year – one of the highest increases registered, with around 2 percent rise among young people in the US.
Although it is known that the disease is linked to obesity, experts have noticed that it also seems to prevent it in fit and healthy patients.

Some believe that the explanation must be in environmental factors that young people are exposed to more than previous generations, such as plastics and even pollution.
Signs of colon cancer include abdominal pain, a lump in the abdomen, bloated and feel very tired or short of breath.
Bleeding from the rear passage, or blood in the stool, occurs when cancer tumors bleed in the digestive tract.
However, colon cancer can also appear without symptoms until it has spread, where it becomes more difficult to treat.
In general, it is expected that just over half of the colon cancer patients will live 10 years after their diagnosis.
But all types of cancers increase in young people.
In a milestone survey, Cancer Research UK investigated 50 years of NHS data and discovered that the risk of cancer development has risen sharply, especially among young people.
In these demographic diagnoses, to 23 percent had risen in people aged 20 to 49.
Researchers are still trying to investigate factors that are the increase in early starting cancers, with some modern diets, exposures to microplastics or a combination of different triggers, can be fault.
