Great Britain’s Sonay Kartal was subjected to online abuse after her last 16 defeat against the Russian opponent Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova at the center of the court in Wimbledon on Sunday
Wimbledon ‘damages his image’ by allowing a stream of abuse aimed at the new British tennis sensation Sonay Kartal on his own social media channels. Kartal, 23, was the subject of hundreds of messages of abuse on two of Wimbledon’s own Facebook reports after her loss in the last 16 against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Sunday.
Kartal, who became an immediate favorite of fans with her relaxed attitude and love for tattoos, was the target of cruel messages about her appearance. Only after he was warned about the abuse, Wimbledon Chiefs deleted around 1,000 messages, about 24 hours after they had been posted.
That is despite the fact that there is clear involvement of those who monitor the channel with other fans who comment. Marcel Knobil, founder of Superbrands, said that Wimbledon damaged his image by allowing such comments on his own channels.
He said: “Wimbledon is a brand icon in the tennis world and a brand where the brand values are based on honesty, elegance and do the right thing, not only in terms of playing style and clothing, but in terms of behavior and worn in the right way.
“So to organize such vitriol and toxicity, would be at odds of what we would expect from that brand. It is such a prestigious and historical brand that it therefore requires the more responsible guardians on his platforms, and it seems that this is not the case here.

“On the one hand you can be noisy with some clothing players, with serious reprimanders if you have a small dash of color on a sock and on the other hand such mean insults appear on your own platforms.
“They should focus on encouraging great volleys from players, not volleys of abuse. This also influences the tennis brand in general.
“Football has really suffered from hooliganism and there are many brands that refuse to be involved in that world. As a result, the brand image traditionally has a picture of quality and decency and organizing such toxicity on its own channel really influences the image of the sport in general.”
What should Wimbledon do about the online abuse? Say in the commentary part.
A spokesperson for the All England Club said: “Wimbledon’s Social Analytics Tool automatically assesses comments from sentiment and flags messages with a large part of negativity.
“Our digital team also does a considerable amount of manual moderation of comments on all the official social channels of Wimbledon with the aim of removing inappropriate content as quickly as possible.”
