July is Fibroid Awareness Month.
Fibroids cannot be life-changing and not in a good way. Up to 8 out of 10 women develop fibroids by the time they reach the age of 50, and that can mean that debilitating cramps and soak-through-your-good bleeding bleed during your period.
Research is underway why women and people who have assigned women at birth (AFAB) receive fibroids, but certain factors such as family history and race can increase your risk. For example, fibroids are up to three times more often in black women, and black women are usually diagnosed with fibroids, experienced more serious symptoms and have higher percentages of surgery and hospitalization compared to white women.
