Young men who are affected by hair loss are increasingly turning to a baldness solution that avoids both medicines and expensive transplant surgery.
Salons in the United Kingdom offer so-called ‘hair systems’ on size made hairpieces that are bound to the scalp and styled to mix seamlessly with existing hair.
Sometimes referred to as ‘The New Toupee’, the hair systems cost between £ 150 and £ 600 and can produce dramatic, natural -looking results in an hour.
The trend has received a grip on social media, where videos of the transformations regularly attract millions of views.
One of the salons that have become viral is the Hair Repair Club in Derby, which has more than 22,000 followers on Instagram.
Owner Adam Fletcher, known online as the ‘Toupee King’, said: ‘There has been an enormous growth in the demand for hair systems in recent years, because the quality of the product has improved considerably. The most important attraction is that it is non-surgical with an immediate transformation.
“These are people who have often struggled for years with the impact of their hair loss, and we can offer a fast but long -term solution.”
Experts say that it is not surprising that the craze of the hair system left as a cheaper solution to tackle the impact of hair loss.
Dr. David Fenton, a dermatologist who specializes in hair loss, said: ‘You cannot underestimate the psychological impact that balancing or thinner hair can have on a person, including fear and depression.
“Especially for younger people it makes a huge amount of their self -esteem, so loss can have a major impact.”

About 6.5 million men in the UK experience a kind of hair loss.
What causes it can vary. The most common form, called male baldness, is linked to genetics, which means it is in the family. Some can develop alopecia areata, where the immune system wrongly attacks the scalp tissue, causing the hair to fall in patches. Stress can also cause the problem.
In the UK, millions of men take drugs, such finasteride and minoxidil, which is proven to slow down hair loss – or even vice versa -.
Every year thousands also pay for a hair transplant – a surgical procedure in which hair follicles are removed from part of the scalp and grafted in an area with less coverage.
Transplants, which usually cost around £ 5,000, are not always successful. And in some cases, where patients can have advanced hair loss, it is unlikely that the procedure will work.
However, systems are effective for all patients, regardless of the cause of their hair loss.
The pieces are usually made from individually woven strands of human hair, which is tailored to the existing hair color and texture of a customer. These are then absorbed in a cap -like structure that is then applied to the scalp with glue.
The hair systems can be worn during exercise, including swimming, and only have to be replaced every three to nine months.
Maintenance includes the removal of the system, washing the hair and applying the glue again once a month – this can be done in a salon, just like having a haircut, or by the owner at home.
Fletcher says: ‘Hair systems offer a denser hair head than would deliver a transplant and can be adapted to the needs of the customer.
“We are starting to get customers who already had expensive transplants, but they didn’t get the results they were looking for.”
A patient who benefited from a hair system is Josh Kent, 29, from Norfolk, who claims that his life was being transformed after the piece was mounted two years ago.
The sales manager started losing his hair in his late teenage years.
Josh says: ‘My hair brought me enormous uncertainty that grew up – I would not leave the house without laying hair spray to push it forward. I would really be aware that it would do something that would not fall into place – such as swimming with friends. ‘
Initially, like many men in his situation, he thought the answer to his problem a hair transplant. However, he was told by a private hair surgeon that his loss was too advanced to be an option.
After he met the Hair Repair Club on social media, he made a three -hour trip to get a hair system. For £ 500 it was only a fraction of what Josh was quoted for a transplant.
During a first consultation of one hour, Josh was able to choose the color, density and the way in which he styles his hair.
Two weeks later he returned to the salon to be mounted and stylized, which took an hour.
Josh says: ‘The system has changed my life enormously. I did not have trust and had made an effort dating – but having a hair system has changed that.
‘People don’t believe it is not my hair, and my family and friends were shocked by the transformation. I don’t tell people unless they ask what they rarely do. ‘
Fletcher says: ‘Although many customers are very open about wearing a hair system, I have not even told some people who have not even told their girlfriends. When they have come to me before they go out with their current partner, they often do not have the need to tell them because they have not seen them before. ‘
Currently there are only a handful of hair system specialists in the UK, but given their increasing popularity that could change quickly.
Fletcher adds: “This is a trend that will certainly continue to grow.”
