Waymo remembers 1200 Robotaxis after collisions at low speed with gates and chains | Techcrunch

Waymo gave a software return to 1,200 self-driving vehicles after some of his robotaxis were involved in small collisions with gates, chains and other gate-like roadway objects.

The software update, that was Reported by Reuters for the first timewas carried out at the end of last year, according to documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Alphabet company said in the document that Waymo’s Safety Board decided to carry out a recall to that specific version of software without director to “make relevant regulatory reporting obligations”.

Nhtsa opened a provisional evaluation last May in the automated Waymo’s automated driving system after learning seven incidents in which Robotaxis had collided with “stationary and semi-stationary objects such as gates and chains” between December 2022 and April 2024. None of these, according to NHTSA.

In November 2024, Waymo rolled out a software update to his fleet of robotaxis, which then counted 1200. The software update significantly reduced the chance of these types of events, according to documents submitted to NHTSA. Today, Waymo has 1500 commercial robotaxis in Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Francisco.

Software updates were underway when the NHTSA investigation began, according to the documents. The company had continuous discussions with NHTSA with regard to the evaluation of a comparative risk of autonomous vehicles and offered the agency information about 9 additional collisions with this type of barrier, which took place between February 2024 and December 2024.

Waymo has issued at least two other recall actions. In June 2024, the company issued a software-back group to its Jaguar I-Pace Robotaxis after one of them collided with a telephone pole. Waymo also remembered earlier software in February 2024 after two of his robotaxis had crashed against the same pick -up that was towed by a tow truck.
