Sisters Bridgette and Paula Powers made international news this week after their ‘double eyewitnesses’ report of an alleged shooter on the Sunshine Coast.
They could also be seen on TV in Nine’s 2016 Within a story At the age of 42, then further Australian story in 2021.
Both reports were entitled ‘Birds of A Feather’.

A casual encounter with environmental activist Steve Irwin was a sliding door moment for identical twins Bridgette and Paula Powers.
The sisters struggled to save a green sea turtle that they had found near their Sunshine Coast house and Irwin was called to help.
“We had a troop carrier and a man got out,” recalls Sister Liz Eather. “He put the turtle on a stretcher … and then he saw the girls. He couldn’t take his eyes from them.”
The sisters, lovingly known as the ‘Twinnies’ for friends and family, were an unusual face, dress in identical clothing and often spoke at the same time. But Irwin saw something else that was special to the girls – a passion for nature conservation.
Years later, the sisters serve a 24-hour bird rescue service from the backyard of their house. It is a never -ending passion project and they recover birds that many others could give up.
“They are pros,” says their friend, celebrity veterinarian Chris Brown. “Many people make the mistake of seeing them as a kind of novelty act. (But) De Twinnies fulfill a great job that rehabilitates sea birds.”
The sisters themselves fought poor health for a lifetime, but say that their feathered friends will maintain them. And mother Helen Powers believes that the work is crucial to support the mental and physical well -being of her daughters.
“The birds give them the drive to continue,” she says.
“We try to forget everything about the health problems. We can continue with life. I think if you love something so much, it is easy,” says Paula Powers.
