President Donald Trump signed an executive order in which the economic sanctions imposed on Syria since 2004, which marked a strategic shift in the US foreign policy.
The decision, announced during his recent tour through the Middle East, aims to promote regional stability and to encourage the inclusion of Syria in the Abraham chords that normalized relationships between Israel and various Arab countries in 2020.
Trump emphasized that the measure responds to the transition under the leadership of the new president of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, who took over the power after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.
In a speech in Riyad, Trump stated that the lifting of sanctions is a step towards the reconstruction and reintegration of Syria in the international community, as long as Al-Sharaa fulfills commitments, such as fighting terrorism and recognizing Israel.
“Sanctions hurt, but sometimes you get more honey than with vinegar,“Trump explained and emphasized the need for regional cooperation to prevent Iran’s influence – a country that is still under strict American limitations.
Conservative leaders in the US have supported the decision and consider it a pragmatic step to stabilize the Middle East and to strengthen national security.
“Trump restores American leadership with a strategy that promotes peace and protects our interests,“Said Senator Ted Cruz, who emphasized the Abraham agreement as a historical performance of Trump’s first term.
However, some conservative sectors are careful and warned that Syria must demonstrate a genuine dedication to safety and human rights before they receive further support.
On the other hand, progressive voices criticize the measure and claim that lifting sanctions could benefit a Syrian government that is still connected to controversial groups such as Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham.
This criticism has been refuted by the White House, which it says that the decision is conditional about concrete progress in stability and cooperation with Israel.
The measure has important implications. The standardization of relations between Syria and Israel could reform power relationships in the region, although it is confronted with obstacles such as the Israeli occupation of the Golan Heights and anti-Israel-sentiment in Syria.
Moreover, the economic opening could attract US investments, in accordance with the principles of individual freedom and tax responsibility by encouraging growth without excessive intervention of the state.
Trump, faithful to his vision in order and leadership, gambles on daring diplomacy that prioritizes safety and stability, so that the US keeps the world stage as an important player.
