Welterweight quarter -final action resumed on episode six of The Ultimate Fighter: Team Cormier vs. Team Sonnen With the third matchup of the 170 pound tournament.
Last week it was established that Alex Sanchez from Team Cormier would be confronted against Matt Dixon from Team Sonen.
Sanchez is a 15-3 Pro from Mexico, while Dixon is an 11-1 American whose lonely loss was during an appearance of 2020 in the Contender Series of Dana White.
Spoilers below for TUF 33, episode 6.
Daniel Cormier brought in a few former UFC champions and Tuf -Alumni, Rose Namajunas and Raquel Pennington, to help his team train.
Pennington was a cast member on Tuf 18, which was the first season with ladies’ hunters (there was an eight -year -old men’s tournament plus an eight -year -old ladies tournament that season). Pennington did not win that season, but fought in the UFC 19 times and won a Bantamweight title in 2024.
Namajunas went on to the final of TUF 20, the first season with women exclusively, and it introduced the Stromweight Division in the UFC. Namajunas lost in the final of Carla Esparza for the inaugural title of 115 pounds, but later became a two -time champion.
Chael Sonnen also brought in a guest coach, Tuf Alumni Ed Herman. The old UFC veteran went to the final of the third season of Tuf all the way back in 2006, but lost Grove in the final. Herman fought 27 times in the UFC.
After getting to know Dixon and Sanchez and learn about their background stories, it was time for the hunters to reduce weight and then enter the cage. Both hunters successfully touch the scales and prepared for what they think would be a striking match.
Sanchez, 31, entered the Tuf tournament on a seven-Fight Pro extraction streak, while Dixon, 29, had earned three consecutive first round stops after he fell short in the Contender Series five years ago.
Dixon had a range of four inch arm range and often changed posture. He would land hard body kicks in standing Southpaw and traditional boxing combinations of Orthodox.
He was also the hunter who pushed forward all the time when Sanchez looked against it, despite his coaches who instructed him to attack, and eventually Dixon found the mark with a straight right followed by a left corner that brought down Sanchez. A few sequel strikes later and the game was stopped before the end of round 1.
Cormier was upset that his hunter declined most of the competition and Sanchez and his team let it be in the dressing room with a fiery speech after the game.
The last match of the flight weight of the quarterfinals was officially made.
Team Sonnen’s Roybert Echeverria, 10-2 from Venezuela, will assume Tumelo of Team Cormier, 6-1 from South Africa, in a confrontation with 125 pounds.
