Veteran filmmakers pass on the torch to emerging creatives.
Black filmmakers and creatives filled the historic SVA theater of New York City Surrounded by StoriesA film showcase guided by BIPOC by surrounded by water, a collective co-founder of actor Tristian Mack and filmmaker Greg Cally to emphasize films from and for black artists. The June 21 Event contained both upcoming talent and experienced professionals, all parts of stories that are often overlooked by regular media.
“Our collective surrounded by water wanted to create an inclusive space for BIPOC makers not only to show their works, but to build on their projects, network to grow in this industry and to celebrate their performance. The showcase contained stories about black historical figures, such as Victor Glover, the first black person who travels to the moon. Some films have tackled sensitive topics, such as the complex relationship between law enforcement and the black community.
The event also contained ‘The Art of Acting’, a panel with actors Naughton, Wilds, Guyviaud Joseph and Tsjaad Coleman, who shared their experiences and offered advice for Aspirant actors.
The highlight of the event was trying to the deceased actor Michael K. Williams. Williams’ cousin, Domenic Dupont, came on stage to present the very first Michael K. Williams Creative Fellowship. Originally planned for a single receiver, Wilds and Cally decided to name two inaugural guys: Mitchell Campbell and Jessie Nunoo.
Prior to the event, surrounded by water, discussed the inspiration for the Fellowship on the Instagram page.
