SBS productions will try to record more people with disabilities and people from non-European cultural and linguistically diverse communities.
SBS has launched new guidelines for commissioning inclusion (2025-2028), and confirms its dedication to ensure that all Australians see themselves and their communities represent on the screen.
The guidelines outline extensive multi-year goals for the recording of talent of historical and constant under-represented communities in roles in SBS committee programs, including internal productions.*
They include updated benchmarks for people with disabilities and introduced a new sub-target for non-European cultural and linguistically diverse communities.
“At SBS, Inclusion is central to who we are as an organization, and supports how we assign content and make content,” said Kathryn Fink, SBS director of television (shown below, right).
“Our earlier guidelines set a new benchmark for representation in our sector and our new commissioning inclusion guidelines for 2025-2028 will continue to support our ambition and the unique goal of SBS as a network.
“We believe that an industry without obstacles to hear your voice is essential to feed the continuous success of Australian Storytelling at home as a worldwide. Our goal is to stimulate meaningful, long-term change in the long term by investing in the depth and width of Austic talent, added and from the screen.
They are announced as the Diversity Inclusion Network screen. Everyone has 2.0 findings about diversity under 395 Australian TV and film projects, both on and off-screen.
The launch of the SBS inclusion inclusion guidelines (2025-2028) follows the conclusion of SBS’s first commissioning equipment & inclusion guidelines (2021-2024), in which SBS successfully achieved all goals, which were subsequently expanded for a year while the next ititeration was developed.
The guidelines of SBS are intended to remove barriers when throwing talent on the screen and hiring outdoor screen crew, and focus on the representation of people from five important under-represented groups-first Nations Peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, LGBTQ+ People, People’s with Disability.
In the new guidelines, SBS has updated benchmarks for people with disabilities and a new sub-target for non-European cultural and linguistically diversified communities. These updates recognize areas where improvement is needed in the sector. The SBS guidelines were also informed by the involvement and consultation in the industry, as well as taking the earlier performance of SBS and the analysis of the population and industrial data.
SBS’s Scripted and Unscripde-Eded programs have objectives for roles and off-screen and for career development, on a Show-by show base. When measuring this, SBS will also keep track of how the important groups represents in its entire content -lying.
The dedication of SBS to transparency and accountability continues with its new guidelines, with public reporting every year to measure and update progress. SBS also continues to invest in initiatives that offer meaningful career opportunities and paths for under -represented talent and enriched stories. * SBS’s commissioning recording guidelines do not apply to SBS’s news and current affairs and sports programming. Goals do not apply to NITV productions that have their own unique share targets, as set out in the NITV guidelines for commissioning.
