India will start with the domestic production of rare earth magnets in Hyderabad in an attempt to reduce dependence on Chinese import and to strengthen its position in the production of critical technology, said Coal and Mines Reddy Minister, the Minister of Kishan Reddy on Saturday.Speaking with Ani, Reddy said that the Center for Transforming Science and Materials (NFTSM) has ordered the National Institute for Transforming, under the Ministry of Mijnen, to stimulate this initiative in collaboration with industrial players. “The central government has decided to produce rare earth magnets in Hyderabad. The NFTSM Institute of our mining control is working diligently, together with different industries, to produce the necessary machines,” he said.Reddy added that a demonstration of the indigenous possibilities of India in the production of permanent magnets would be ready within the next 3-4 months. “This initiative includes cooperation between industry, mining and other ministries and has been discussed with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The central government is working seriously on the production of rare earth magnets,” he said. The move comes in response to China’s decision earlier this year to limit the export of certain rare earth materials. “We were 100% dependent on China for the permanent magnets of rare earth, but recently denied China to deliver to us,” the minister said.In April 2024, China imposed export checks on a list of rare earth -related articles, which activates the supply disruptions worldwide and countries such as India are accelerating domestic production plans.Industrial organs have welcomed the efforts of the government. Pankaj Mohindroo, chairman of the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), praised the initiative, in particular the incentives that are considered to support magnetic production. The urge to develop rare earth possibilities falls under the broader critical mineral mission announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the budget of 2024-25. In January 2025, the cabinet approved the launch of the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM), with a budgeted editions of RS 16,300 Crore and an expected investment of RS 18,000 crore by public companies in the public sector.Rare earth magnets are important components in various high-tech applications, including electric vehicles, mobile phones, wind turbines and defense systems.
