Ozempic is linked to a potentially blinding state that causes internal bleeding behind the eyes.
An Israeli study discovered that patients who had ozempic or similar weight loss shots twice as much chance of suffering from a serious degenerative eye disease compared to those not on medication.
The condition, neovascular age-related macular degeneration (NAMD), ensures that leaking blood vessels grow behind the eye that can spill liquid in the retina-what leads to permanent damage and blindness.
Ozempic and similar drugs work by simulating the naturally occurring GLP-1 hormone of the body, which reduces hunger.
And although the exact link between weight loss medicines and vision problems is not known, scientists believe that they bind to GLP-1 receptors in the eye, activating the growth of the blood vessels.
Although cases were rare, experts warned the signal in the data – saying that further investigation was needed.
It is at least the second eye condition that must be linked to the drug, after scientists have also found a potential link with non-arterite front ischemic optical neuropathy (NAION)-a condition in which the optical nerve is damaged, causing blindness.
And only a few days after the drug was linked to a higher risk of kidney cancer, although researchers said it reduces the risk of other cancer forms.

After he had resigned by obese, Brad Roberts could not believe it when he lost 24 pounds in a month in drugs for weight loss. In a shocking turn of events, however, the 44-year-old father of four and his wife Stacey complained to the doctor who prescribed the drugs for weight loss
About one in eight Americans has already tried a GLP-1 such as Ozempic, suggesting surveys, while it is thought that about 15 million or 6 percent are in the medicines.
Age -related macular degeneration affects around 19 million adults in the US, suggesting estimates, in which older adults are the most affected.
Of these, approximately 1.5 million have the form of the late stage, with NAMD behind approximately 10 percent of these cases according to the non-profit Clear focus. It says that 90 percent of patients with NAMD are considered legally blind.
In the state, new, abnormal and fragile blood vessels on the macula area grow in the middle of the eye behind central, high resolution, color vision and then blood and liquid can leak, causing damage and loss of eyesight.
Although it is not clear what the condition causes exactly, the American Academy or Ophthalmology suggests that it could be due to shifts in hormones in the eye that causes the growth of more blood vessels.
For the study, published in Jama -OpenthalmologyScientists have extracted data over 139,000 adults in Ontario, Canada, from the ICES database – who collects data about patients in the province from public sources.
All patients had type 2 diabetes and they were on average 66 years old. About 46 percent were female.
About 46,000 were prescribed for at least six months a drug for weight loss such as Ozempic – while the rest used different diabetes medicines.
For three years, researchers registered 93 cases of NAMD in the weight loss group (or 0.2 percent of patients).
But in the group that did not use the medicine, there were 88 cases (or 0.1 percent of patients).

Real Housewives by New Jersey star Dolores Catania admitted that he had used Ozempic to lose weight the six weeks before the RHNJ reunion. There is no evidence that she has lost a vision by the medicine

The researchers said: ‘An explanation for the increasing risk with long-term exposure is that the retina contains receptors for GLP-1, and [these] It is known that it increases the levels of CXCL12. ‘
The researchers said that CXCL12 is a substance that attracts white blood cells, possibly causing the growth of new blood vessels.
Of the patients, 97 percent were reportedly reported on a semaglutide – including semaglutide – while the rest was on Lixiside – brand name Adlyxin.

Scientists started the individuals to follow on average to three years between January 2020 and November 2023.
Ozempic’s maker Novo Nordisk is already confronted with different lawsuits of people who say that the medicine has robbed them of their sight-included Todd Engel, a 62-year-old diabetes of type 2 who lost the vision in his right eye only four months after he started using the shots.
At the time, his doctors had no idea that the Jabs could be linked to it and rejected it as a coincidence – so he continued to use them. Six months later he also lost the vision in his left eye.
Doctors say that the damage is permanent and that Engle will never see again – with most he can perceive his vague light pin pricks of light.
He was diagnosed with non -arterite front ischemic optical neuropathy, or naion, a rare condition that takes blood flow to the optic nerve and permanent loss of vision.

Now blind in both eyes, the 62-year-old is forced to give up his job as an operator of a motor equipment.
At home, his family has installed special push button controls for the microwave and television devices that he can no longer see, but can still hear.
He says he was never warned about the potential risk – and believes that he would have reconsidered the medicine if he had known the danger.
Engel has been living with type 2 diabetes for more than 25 years and used medicines to manage it.
His lawyers say that he had no history of eye problems and routinely passed the annual vision tests that are needed for his work.
English lawyer Ashley Hornstein, from the Motley Rice law firm, told The Daily Mail: ‘The tragic thing about this case is that he had no idea that this was even a possibility with the medicine.
“He stayed on Ozempic for five or six months after the loss of vision took the first time.
“If he hadn’t done that, it’s pretty likely that he would still have a vision in one eye today – that all belongs to this horrible tragedy.”
