CFR Cluj coach Dan Petrencu is unhappy that the Nigerian defender Kenneth Omeruo is still not ready to play. Omeruo was expected to help the team in the Europa League, but he was unable to participate in the training due to a knee injury.

Omeruo, 31, joined the Romanian club CFR Cluj this summer after leaving the Turkish side Kasimpasa. He was signed to replace Andrei Burcps, who moved to China.

However, Omeruo has not played or trained with the team because of his injury.

“Omeruo is not ready,” said coach Petrencu for the 0-0-drawing game of the team with the Hungarian Club Paksi FC. “He has a serious knee problem. We try to solve it, but he can’t train with the team now. If he can normally train, he can play.”

Due to the injury, Omeruo was not included in the team for the Europa League match against Paksi FC.

Omeruo has played 69 times for the Nigeria national team and was last seen in action in September 2024. Since he left Kasimpasa, he tries to recover from a meniscus problem in his knee.

The president of CFR Cluj, Cristi Balaj, still believes that signing Omeruo was a good decision.

“He played many times for Nigeria. His injury is serious, but we believe he will restore and help the team,” Balaj said.

Omeruo started his European career in 2012 with Chelsea, but never played for their first team. He spent time on loan at clubs in the Netherlands, England and Spain before moving permanently to Leganés and later returned to Turkey.

CFR Cluj hopes that the experienced defender will soon recover and this season can support the team
