At least 23 BJP legislators gathered on Friday evening in the home of former minister Thongam Biswajit Singh in Imphal to form a consensus to prioritize unity among them and form a government. It is more than three months since the president’s rule was imposed in the state affected by the fight.
The meeting, held in the midst of continuous tensions and a long -term political impasse, culminated in a joint resolution to set aside personal ambitions for the greater interests of the state and its people.
The BJP Huddle came only two days after party MLA Thokchom Radhshyam stated that 44 legislators had agreed to form a popular government, causing their willingness to act in accordance with the will of the public. This figure in particular excludes the ten Kuki SO MLAs and five congress laws.
The BJP legislators have pronounced a collective dedication to unity, peace and the restoration of common harmony in Manipur. “We have decided to put aside personal ambitions in the greater interest of the state, the people and the vision of the BJP and his alliance partners,” was a statement.
The legislators acknowledged that the suffering by the people of Manipur over the past two years of ethnic violence between the members of the Meiti and Kuki-ZO communities that have killed more than 250 people, and emphasized the need for a long-term, inclusive solution. They identified political will, constitutional guarantees, impartial law enforcement and inclusive dialogue as essential pillars for solving the crisis.
During the deliberations, the leaders supported the establishment of a neutral dialogue platform to facilitate the structural involvement between the Meiti and Kuki-ZO communities.
They also discussed the feasibility to formally ask the appointment of a ‘peace -envoy’ or a panel of eminent persons by the Governor and the Center, to bridge impartial mediation and to bridge existing trust shortages.
The BJP MLAs underlined the importance of inter-community dialogue at the basic level in which institutions for local governance, social organizations, student organizations and religious groups are involved. They called for well -monitored disarmament efforts and the recovery of plundered weapons over the hills and the valley, and emphasized the need for central and national troops to act with strict neutrality.
Regarding the Gwaltabi incident on 20 May, the BJP legislators insisted on initiating the government with the dialogue with media representatives and social organizations (CSOs) to arrive at an amicable consensus.
The president’s rule was imposed in Manipur days after N Biren resigned as Prime Minister, almost two years after ethnic violence broke out in the northeastern state.
