Javier Mascherano was in the rare position to be forced to defend his decision to play Lionel Messi. The Inter Miami boss allowed the Argetina star to complete 90 minutes in a comfortable victory over Montreal.

The side of Mascherano created a considerable advantage when Messi scored his second goal of the match to make the score 4-1 in Canada. The MLS giants could not increase the score because they earned three points when they return from Club World Cup promotion, where they could not pass Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 of the tournament.

And former Liverpool and Barcelona -midfielder Mascherano was asked why he persisted with Messi, 38, on the field instead of making use of the opportunity to manage his minutes on Saturday evening. The 41-year-old offered a simple reasoning.

“We have to understand that Leo is happiest when he plays football,” said Mascherano. “Every time he is fit, he wants to play – and we will allow him.

“He gives us a huge advantage when he is on the field, and of course we want to make the best of it.”

Mascherano admitted that his team had a hectic luminaire list that pops up while in the room of 10 days opposite New England Revolution, Nashville, FC Cincinnati and New York Red Bulls. And that is why the coach was pleased to claim a victory over Montreal.

“We have consecutive games and we need every player ready. The person who gets the chance must be prepared,” he said. “This was an important competition – Montreal came in with a good momentum, but our team came to the opportunity.”

The presence of Messi for Away Games has formed a big talk point since he arrived from PSG in MLS. The competition for the title of best player has ever proven a big draw for the competition in all quarters, such as his profile.

Montreal sold the Stade Saputo for the visit of Inter Miami, and there was no shortage of pink kits worn by supporters in the stands. It is not known that there is an advantage for the Mascherano side.

“I don’t want to analyze it,” he said. “We are very lucky – when we play away, the majority of the crowd comes to see Messi, and many of them are actually fans of his. They usually try to support him, and that is something that we do not naturally consider,” he said.
