England star Jofra Archer was able to get a fine from the ECB to wear the wrong color socks on his long-awaited return to action for Sussex. Archer, 30, started his first Red-Ball match since 2021 on Sunday, as he goes back to his long way back to the English test side.

The fast bowler took one wicket for 28 runs on day two, when Sussex went north to play Durham in Chester-le-Street in the County Championship. While Archer looked in a considerable touch with both bat and ball, his socks were able to put him into trouble with the ECB.

County Championship Regulations say that ‘socks should only be white or light gray’, but instead the 30-year-old black wore. Archer’s Faux Pas can lead to a fine or a warning from the ECB.

That is the kind of punishment with which India captain Shubman Gill is confronted after being seen in black socks against England in Headingley on Friday. Despite reaching a century century, Gill looks at a formal warning or a fine between 10 and 20 percent of his competition costs.

According to Clause 19.45 of the clothing and equipment rules of the ICC, players can only wear ‘white, cream or light gray socks in test matches. However, if his infringement was coincidental whether his correct socks were unusable, he could escape a penalty.

In the second test, Gill could be confronted with Archer as Edgbaston, which starts on Wednesday 2 July. After he played for England in one -day matches in 2025, he is about to finally return to the test team after years of injuries.

Archer’s return would be at the right time, because England is starting a huge year of test cricket. On top of five home games against India that extend until August, November, England sees traveling to Australia in the ashes.

The National Selector Luke Wright revealed earlier this month when England hopes to have Archer available again. “Jof is actually very easy to experience,” Wright said.

“The plan is that he plays a few second team matches, to load in the second team for Sussex. And then the idea is for him to play for Sussex against Durham during the first test. If all things go well, he must be available for the second test.”

England captain Ben Stokes recently revealed how enthusiastic Archer is to play, even to ask to be picked for the one-off test from May at home to Zimbabwe. “He has been absolutely desperate to put the white shirt again. Random, a few times, would he just send me an SMS with the text:” Zim? “,” Said Stokes.

“I had something like that:” Let’s just hold it there, okay. I know you’re in a good place now, but let’s not just hurry. He clearly had a horrible time with injuries, but he has had a good amount of cricket, albeit in the White ball formats.

“It is really exciting for England, but also more exciting for Jof that he is now in a position where a plan was able to have a plan and hopefully to get through something to actually be eligible for selection for test cricket.”
