Almost all of us will be guilty of a sweet treat before bed.

But experts say that even a healthy – such as a piece of fruit – can come with unfortunate health risks.

Sour foods such as citrus fruits and tomatoes can stimulate the stomach to produce acid, which leads to uncomfortable reflux symptoms, including heartburn, according to nutritionist Kyle Crowley.

This common burning sensation in the chest is caused by stomach acid that travels to the throat and is particularly common in the evening.

More worries, the problem – that affects one in four people in the UK – is known that it increases the risk of stomach and esophageal cancer if it remains untreated in the long term.

Moreover, the symptoms of acid reflux often mask the signs of this type of cancer, because they are comparable – Swallow problems and be sick.

Yet experts say that this can be easily solved by ensuring that you get your last bite in a few hours before you go to bed.

Crowley, main food expert at Protein Works, said: itRY to prevent a full meal from being eaten close to bed, whether it is at the table or under the comforter.

Even eating healthy food such as oranges, grapefruits and tomatoes before bed can lead to heartburn

“It can lead to poor digestion and disturbed sleep.”

Research has long shown that the food is too close to bed to uncomfortable reflux, which can cause irritation, discomfort and disturbed sleep patterns.

Sour reflux is caused by stomach acid that flows into the esophagus – the tube that connects the mouth and stomach – that shows the soft tissue.

Even more harmful is eating acid food in bed, Mr. Crowley warned.

‘If you want to eat in bed, it is best to do this upright and not to lie back immediately afterwards. This allows you to sleep better and reduce your risk of midnight wake-ups. ‘

In addition to acid fruit, the nutritionist also advised to avoid fat food before bedtime.

This is because fat food causes the release of a hormone to relax the valve on the bottom of the esophagus, so that more acid can flow to the throat.

However, sour foods such as oranges, tomatoes and grapefruit irritate the valve.

Some people with acid reflux will not realize that they have the condition. Experts warn alcohol, coffee, citrus fruits and spicy food can all worsen the condition

Instead, MR Crowley advised to choose nuts and milk before bedtime, if you are desperate on an evening snack.

About a quarter of the people in the UK suffer from acid reflux, where one in 10 people take their meals to bed in the UK, according to the survey.

Other common symptoms are a chronic cough – which lasts longer than eight weeks – frequent throat that cleans up hoarse and a sore throat.

Often someone with these symptoms will not realize that they have reflux because the esophageal tissues have probably been exposed to acid for so long, they are stunned to its effects.

These ‘silent’ symptoms means that the condition can be overlooked, which has serious health risks.

The most extreme manifestation of sour damage is esophageal cancerWhat can result from the effect of acid on the delicate cells in the food pipe and affects around 9,400 people every year.

The NHS advises everyone who experiences symptoms who do not only improve three weeks to contact their doctor for advice.
