Earlier this week, AI DEV platform hugged Face published an open AI model for robotics called Smolvla. Train on “compatible license,” community-shared datasets, Smolvla performs better than much larger models for robotics in both virtual and real-world environments, causing facial claims.

Smolvla is part of the fast-growing effort of the Face to set up an ecosystem of cheap robotics hardware and software. Last year the company launched Lerobot, a collection of robotics-oriented models, data sets and tools. More recent, hugging face -acquired pollen robotics, a robotics startup based in France, and revealed various cheap robotics systems, including humanoids, for purchase.

Smolvla, which is 450 million parameters in size, was trained on data from Datasets from Lerobot Community, specially marked Robotics data sets that are shared on the AI ​​development platform of Hugging Face. Parameters, sometimes referred to as weights, are the internal components of a model that guides its behavior.

Cuddling Face claims that Smolvla is small enough to be executed on a single GPU of the consumer – or even a MacBook – and can be tested and implemented on “affordable” hardware, including the company’s own robotics.

In an interesting turn, Smolvla also supports an ‘asynchronous inference pile’, which, according to Hugging Face, enables the model to separate the processing of the actions of a robot from the processing of what it sees and hears. It is worth noting that cuddling face is far from the only player in the emerging open robotics race.

NVIDIA has a collection of tools for open robotics, and Startup K-Schal Labs builds the components for what the ‘open-source humanoids’ calls. Other formidable companies in the segment are Dyna robotics, physical intelligence and RLWRLD supported by Jeff Bezos.
