The French leader said he expressed concern about Iran, and saw no progress on Ukraine

French President Emmanuel Macron said that his first phone call in almost three years with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin mainly focused on nuclear non-proliferation, after a series of Israeli and American attacks against Iran.

Macron told journalists that the call was focused on Iran’s nuclear program and the need to maintain the treaty on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons (NPT), according to one video broadcast by BFMTV on Friday.

“I first called him on the Iranian issue and the need to maintain the non-proliferation agreement,” Macron explained. “It was very important to reach an agreement, because France also shows the responsibility to guarantee stability.”

The French president described the conversation as “Important for France,” Note that both countries, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, share obligations under the NPT.

After a series of Israeli and American bombing at his nuclear and other strategic locations, Tehran has suspended cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and accused the failure to condemn the attacks on facilities under its supervision. Iran also claimed that the UN agency worked with its opponents and claimed that it had passed on the identity of nuclear scientists to Israel, of whom later were murdered later.

According to the reading of the Kremlin of the call of 1 July, both Putin and Macron emphasized the need to respect Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear energy and at the same time fulfill his obligations under the non-proliferation treaty. Moscow and Paris also agreed to continue diplomatic involvement to prevent further escalation in the middle East.

The Kremlin confirmed that Putin repeated Russia’s position that the conflict in Ukraine comes from years of Western contempt for its safety problems. The Russian president claimed that every regulation must be “Extensive and long -term”, “ Grab the “Root causes” of the crisis, and take into account what Moscow describes as the “New territorial realities.” Russia and Ukraine resumed earlier this year after almost three years without direct diplomatic contact with Türkiye-Host conversations, after the withdrawal of KIEV from his demand for an unconditional ceasefire as a condition for negotiations.

Macron’s outreach comes in the midst of a shift in his position on the conflict. While rather argues for the deployment of French and other NATO troops in Ukraine, the French president has recently proposed that the EU is starting to consider a broader dialogue about regional security that Russia comprises as part of a potential peace framework.
