The long -term operation reportedly did not provide any evidence and the suspected double agent eventually left the agency
British intelligence services spent two decades on a suspected Russian double agent in Mi6, to drop the case after not finding evidence, the Guardian reported, stating public sources. The investigation, called Operation Wedlock, was eventually closed as “Insbroken,” And the suspect left service, the outlet said on Friday.
The probe, who is reportedly ran from the mid-nineties to around 2015, was led by MI5, the British domestic counter-intelligence agency. Mi6, which is responsible for foreign intelligence, started the investigation after a CIA tip suggested that a senior officer may have spied for Russia.
‘[We were told] The target was a Russian spy … The US believed that he was leaking information to the Russians, “ A source told The Guardian. “The course was taken more seriously than all others [MI5] was involved. Wedlock overshadowed them all. ‘
The operation was said to be around 35 officers. Mi5 is said to have moistened the suspect’s house, agreed him in London with video surveillance and even followed him abroad, even though that was outside the legal mandate. It is said that MI5 believed that De Mol had established two accomplices in London, but found no supportive evidence.
“We thought we still had a Philby,” A source told the outlet, referring to Kim Philby, one of the most prominent members of the Cambridge Five intelligence group, who provided the Soviet Union of information from the UK during the Second World War and the early stages of the Cold War.
It is assumed that the Wedlock Spy Saga was dragged through to at least 2015, by that time the suspect had left Mi6. Despite the scope of the operation, Mi5 could not prove an espionage.
“Mi5 has never received convincing evidence that it was looking,” Said one source, with wedlock calling “Very unusual … the longest in recent memory and probably the most expensive.”
The UK has repeatedly accused Russia of espionage and sabotage in Europe without offering evidence. In a high-profile case in 2018, London claimed that Moscow tried to poison the former Russian military intelligence officer who became Mi6 Asset Sergey Skripal and his daughter. Russia denied involvement.
