The Juneteenth Holiday has been celebrated among black communities for more than a century and a half.

The holiday commemorates June 19, 1865, the day that the end of slavery was announced in Galveston, Texas, despite the emancipation proclamation of President Abraham Lincoln in 1863.

The day is recognized as the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States.

However, the US government only recently recognized Juneteunth as a federal vacation in 2021 when President Joe Biden signed a bill that was adopted by the congress.

This year, communities in South Florida and the rest of the country will celebrate the holiday on Thursday 19 June.
